Spring Training 2023
Quote from Henry Silvestre on March 5, 2023, 10:32 amQuote from Randy Manese on March 5, 2023, 10:16 amLast day in the ST line-up for Manny and Cruz before they leave for the WBC. Interesting to note that Grisham has been at the top of the line-up for 2 straight days versus LH SP. His splits aren't that exaggerated in the LH vs. RH so maybe Melvin just showing him some confidence that he's an everyday player and wants him to work more on getting on base vice trying to get an extra base hit every time up. Likewise with Cronenworth being higher up in the order than you would expect even though it is ST. Likely Melvin testing his comfort up there to get that L/R hitting rotation until Tatis comes back; then he can drop Croney back down somewhere in the 5-7 batting slot.
It's going to be a fun time when everyone comes back and healthy! I think we're going to average around 4-5 runs per game and we'll get a couple guys at or close to 100 runs scored and 100 RBI.
I am thinking more on the 5 to 6 runs per game.. remember in 2022 we avg >5 runs on the road and a lot less at Petco.. I think this lineup avgs 4-5 at Petco and 5-6.5 on the road..for a 5 to 6 runs per game overall.. I think the new rules will also bump the MLBs avg team ERA's up at least .5 runs per game from the P side..

Groome 6.2 IP 7 SO 1.05 WHIP 0.00 ERA LHP
Perhaps a battle for #6 with Joe out.. or even last SP spot / vs Lugo (Lugo to BP?)

Quote from Randy Manese on March 5, 2023, 3:27 pmIf it comes down to Teheran or Groome, then with Musgrove hurt and some uncertainty with the other starters you have to go with experience, so my vote is with Teheran. He'll give up some hits, maybe even a HR, but I believe he knows how to get himself out of jams better than Groome because of those many years of MLB experience. This will be especially important early on since we won't have Tatis' bat in the line-up to start the season.
I do think that Groome will be an important piece of the rotation this year and his development will be vital to the Padres' success over the very long 162 game season. Almost certainly the first man up if struggles from the back end of the rotation, we have another injury to a SP or Snell can't get out of his head and trust his stuff. However, I'm more optimistic than pessimistic so it's good to have guys have Groome and a new and improved Weathers in reserve. Both are LHP but we're currently a RH dominant rotation, so that's okay with me.
On at the other end of things, Lopez continues to struggle and wasn't that impressed by Knehr or Avila in their most recent outings. Hoping to see more from Morejon but may not be ready to go as many innings as the Padres would like him to go at the beginning of the year, so pegging him for El Paso; lastly, would like to see Honeywell nail down the 13th pitcher spot - a good "comeback" story if it happens.
Funny, after all the ups and downs over the years with Stammen, it's kind of comforting to know that he could be brought up if needed to steady the bullpen. I know he's a very respected clubhouse presence among the pitching staff.

Quote from MrPadre19 on March 5, 2023, 3:35 pmKnehr and Avila are AAA SP’s at best.
They are the reason all these others were brought in.
If they were ready we wouldn’t have needed Teheran,Honeywell etc.
At this point Groome and Teheran have separated themselves from the rest….still early.
No matter how he pitches we need to find a way to keep Honeywell….his upside is too great to let go just to keep someone with extremely limited upside(Knehr/Avila).

I’m right there with you Mr P
Teheran, Groome and Honeywell would be great additions to this pitching staff…I thought Groome looked good today and probably could have gone another inning, Teheran has been the pitcher he was before the injuries and Honeywell has good stuff and is only going to get better.
in the event the padres don’t extend/ resign Snell it would appear they have some good options to plug into the rotation for 2024.
I still would like to see them get something done with Snell because when he is right he is filthy

Quote from MrPadre19 on March 5, 2023, 4:23 pmBest thing about Snell is that when he does struggle it’s in the first half of the season.
He is always at his best in the second half and in the Playoffs….when we need him most.
That’s not a small thing….

Quote from fenn68 on March 5, 2023, 5:52 pmIt is all well and good to see Teheran, Groome, and the like being on the opening day roster but who is DFA’d?
Padres have 14 pitchers who cannot be optioned … one Musgrove and when he returns Lopez will probably go. If on opening day Groome (or any player with options) makes the team (likely the DFA Lopez) then when Musgrove is activated Groome gets optioned or someone else is DFA’d.
Worse situation if Teheran makes the 26 since he cannot be optioned … Lopez goes for him and who goes for Musgrove (Honeywell?).
Most likely Lopez and Honeywell are gone once Musgrove returns if a different option is added. Long way to go so more injuries can factor in or trades maybe using Crismatt, Garcia, or Pomeranz.

Quote from fenn68 on March 5, 2023, 5:58 pmIn today’s game it was Azocar who looked best to me.
Put the bat on the ball in RBI situations with two sac flys … a perfectly executed sac bunt … and a nice catch in RF where he made a long run and immediately was in position to throw to the plate preventing the runner from trying to score.
If you like the “small things” done right … especially by a bench player … looks as though Azocar is making his case for the 26 man.

Quote from fenn68 on March 5, 2023, 6:03 pmLopez is not impressing. He throws hard but has no control and his FB is pretty straight and really did not see much of a secondary pitch. He really needs to up his game if he wants to stay a Padre. Maybe why TB let him exposed.

Quote from Randy Manese on March 5, 2023, 8:06 pmAgree with Teheran making the OD roster as the #6 SP and getting Lopez off the 40 man one way or another. When Musgrove comes back, you can option Hill (assuming Pomeranz is healthy) and have two LH short men in the pen, Hader being the other. That will leave Garcia and Suarez as the RH short men. On the other hand, because you have Wilson, you might want to explore a trade for Garcia or even Hill, because you have Castillo, Kerr and Cosgrove behind Hill. Because of his salary, I'd be looking to move Garcia first.
If you're looking to move one of the expected long RP, Honeywell or Crismatt, then you still have Morejon to bring up or Groome or Weathers as swing men or possible starters if Martinez or Lugo looks better suited to the RP role. I'd like to take a really long look at Honeywell before letting him go and hope he remains healthy because he could come all the way back to SP status.
I believe there is a lot of flexibility in the current staff and we're going to need to utilize all those options as the season wears on, hopefully, for small stints at a time on the 10 day IL vice any long term injury.
