Spring Training 2023

I know the easy approach is to take the 13 best pitchers out of ST and set them for opening day. However, it is a 162 game season and the team will need call-ups for short IL, long IL, underperformance … so if the pitchers out of ST are “close” in performance is there some longer term strategy to deploy.

1. Padres have a number of players that can be optioned including Morejon, Groome, Weathers, Wilson … do they get stashed away in the minors for future call-ups

2. Padres have an abundance of RP that can’t be optioned and if not on the 26 man will have to be put on waivers and if at all good likely claimed (or a minor trade). Either way an arm lost for the season.

3. Padres have some non-roster options with a lot of upside but with opt outs (Teheran and Hamels) … do they force themselves on to the 26 man to ensure Padre control to start the season and maybe be trade fodder later on? Hamels may not be an early issue until he gets back into pitching shape but Teheran might be a different story at the end of ST since Musgrove may be IL. Other than he may be a good SP again, adding him before an opt out and later putting him on waivers likely gets more than one team to claim him and a minor trade for a lottery type prospect.

Could be interesting conflict between the best for the short run vs the best for the full season.

Does anyone know what time the ST complex opens?

Game is at 1pm but I'm pretty sure you can get in early in the morning and then have to go out and re-enter for the game.....right?

Finally found it in the FAQ's

Practice Fields open at 9 AM

Watched Scherzer in a ST game today. Did not look good probably because he was “experimenting” with the new rules to try to get an advantage (as if he needs one).

On some pitches he was ready to throw with maybe 8 seconds and the batter ready … then just held to the last second before throwing. Apparently to upset the hitter but he was cutting it close and ended up with violation

On other pitches he was ready before the hitter stepped in then immediately “quick pitched” not giving the hitter much time to get set. That earned him a balk as he made a pitch as the batter stepped in but not looking at the pitcher as he was setting his feet.

I guess what it takes to get an advantage within the rules … but frankly not a good look … especially the “quick pitch” before the hitter was looking.

Cubs no-hit the Padres in yesterday’s game … mainly the AAA club got the AB.

On the positive side Teheran had another good outing … starting and going 3 innings giving up no runs on 3 hits …. 3 K with no BB. Still early ST but he is forcing the Padres to take a longer look for the 26 man as the Musgrove replacement if they stick with a 6 man rotation … given something like 26 games in the first 27 days (give or take) the Padres may want to do so.

On the other hand two of his competitors … Crismatt and Honeywell did not pitch well.

If he continues to perform in ST and coupled with his opt out status from a minor league contract … Padres may be challenged in what to do. Not as though he is some fringe player having a hot ST but a player who had a very successful long run in ATL Including All-Star selection. Wonder if he can be a long RP or end up bumping Lugo to long RP?

Not sure on the rules here since he signed a minor league deal … but ML FA can’t be traded until Jun 15 (without their permission) but MiL players? Could / would the Padres add a bonus to his minor league deal to buy out the opt out?

Still too early in ST to project Teheran … but the guy looks prepared to launch a legit comeback bid.

That's 2X's AS Teheran to you...

Yeah i don't see how he doesn't make the OD if he keeps this up.. I have him behind Martinez (lights out so far) and right there with Wacha for #5..maybe Lugo goes to #7 BP roll.. Teheran has looked > Lugo so far

So if Musgrove goes IL 10 1 or 2 starts missed.. Teheran/Wacha/Lugo would be the 4 5 6. SP to start the yr

Groome also has looked tremendous so???

Teheran is my guy!

With Musgrove 's unfortunate mishap, I'm thinking Julio makes the OD.

Didn't get to see the game, but it seemed like Honeywell was doing okay until they brought him out for his 3rd inning.  Looks like they are intentionally trying to stretch out the potential long men in the pen irrespective of the results.  Given Musgrove's status, I can see Honeywell making opening day over Wilson since they already have Pomeranz, Hill, Garcia, Suarez and Hader as essentially 1 inning pitchers.  So my pitching staff is looking like SP's Darvish, Snell, Martinez, Wacha, Lugo, and Teheran and long RP Honeywell and Crismatt.

At the beginning of the year, I'm sending down Groome, Morejon and Weathers to get stretched out for the long season along with the plethora of RP who have options.  This would change if Pomeranz is not ready to go, Honeywell regresses and the Padres move one or more of their RP who don't have options.

There's going to be a lot of pitchers putting in flying miles between El Paso and San Diego this year and I wouldn't be surprised if the fringes of the pitching staff that's getting the work in March/April will be changed by 33-50% by the end of the year.  Musgrove likely back by the end of April and don't think you can keep Groome, Morejon, Wilson or Castillo down long whether it be because of injury or nonperformance.  I hope this apparent depth is real and not just ST flukes.

I thought Honeywell looked pretty good yesterday. The 3rd inning wasn't great, but he also wasn't helped by Rivas trying to do too much defensively. His stuff looked good.

Last day in the ST line-up for Manny and Cruz before they leave for the WBC.  Interesting to note that Grisham has been at the top of the line-up for 2 straight days versus LH SP.  His splits aren't that exaggerated in the LH vs. RH so maybe Melvin just showing him some confidence that he's an everyday player and wants him to work more on getting on base vice trying to get an extra base hit every time up.  Likewise with Cronenworth being higher up in the order than you would expect even though it is ST.  Likely Melvin testing his comfort up there to get that L/R hitting rotation until Tatis comes back; then he can drop Croney back down somewhere in the 5-7 batting slot.

It's going to be a fun time when everyone comes back and healthy!  I think we're going to average around 4-5 runs per game and we'll get a couple guys at or close to 100 runs scored and 100 RBI.
