Spring Training 2021
Quote from Brian Connelly on March 12, 2021, 6:18 amThe Indians have informed veteran outfielder Billy Hamilton, who is in camp with them on a minor league deal, that he will not make the Opening Day roster, manager Terry Francona announced to reporters this morning (Twitter link via MLB.com’s Mandy Bell). The organization made the decision quickly and will “attempt to help him land” with another club, per Francona.
Worth a look as pure depth? Maybe an early May - early June opt out? WOULD have been a PTBNL type trade, but Cleveland might be able to get a little more now with our need.... Gresham figures to be out awhile just out of caution.

Isnt he just really a less versatile version of Mateo? At least Mateo is somewhat capable of playing on the dirt. Neither one of them would really hit water if they fell out of a boat. Both have speed; although the CF defense nod would probably go to Hamilton.

Would make some sense ... clearly still a plus defender and still can run. A bit concerned CLEV (who really could use OF) bailed on him this early.
Yeh, maybe not even a PTNL but just CASH considerations ... more useful for CLEVE than a non-prospect player which is the best they could hope for.
I could see Profar in CF to start and Hamilton in as a defensive replacement ... Profar to LF to replace Pham. Has the speed and base running skills for that 10th inning man on 2nd. Since defensively, not sold on either Mateo or O’Grady in CF and with a concern surrounding Grisham’s hamstring ... Hamilton is certainly worth a long look.
Might be an upgrade over Mateo who has speed but that does not necessarily show up in him being a plus base runner or defensive CF. Neither can hit all the much.

0 for 17 with 4 BB / 8 K.
Since they are playing him in the field (CF yesterday) .... that start is either due to his new specialized contacts for his eye issue or just a "small sample size" ST thing.
I would start to be concerned if he does not heat up offensively at least a week prior to opening day.

Thought Morejon looked very good today. After that first pitch HR to Marte he had four pitches working ... mixed them well ... good command. The other three hits were basically ground balls to the holes.
He moves to the next round.

Quote from fenn68 on March 13, 2021, 3:53 pmMateo (out of options) vs. O’Grady (options) seems to be tilting way in favor of Mateo for that last bench slot.
Mateo gets another hit today ... now .314 BA ... and subbed into CF. While O’Grady goes 0 for 3 with 2Ks taking him to 2 for 17 this spring with 9K ... both hits in the same game and one a bunt as I recall. He played RF.
Since it looks as though Profar will get the CF shot ahead of either of them ... Mateo’s speed and INF ability maybe becomes more useful than what O’Grady can provide.
