Spring Training 2021
Quote from fenn68 on March 10, 2021, 3:50 pmHozma ... not on the non-roster invitees list BUT he was catching for the Padres in the 7th.
Saw nothing about him being added to the ML camp but as the IL players mount up ... room to add.

Quote from Brian Connelly on March 10, 2021, 9:56 pmYeah SDUT said they added Homza and "Jordan Guerrero" to MLB ST... but not "our" Jordan Guerrero in minors.
This Jordan Guerrero is LH & more of a SP history. Looks like a minors FA sign maybe in response to Nix injury situation?

Quote from Brian Connelly on March 10, 2021, 10:08 pmI'm not worried about Gore. His stuff looks electric. Just needs experience.
A LITTLE worried that none of Gore, Morejon, Weathers, or Baez really feels QUITE ready to step in as #5. But all well above average for a "sometimes" #6. They can really live without a 6th starter until about the 12th-13th game. I'm thinking that's where they're shooting to add Lamet. So maybe whoever wins #5 is really only making 2 starts as #5, then maybe just 1-2 more as #6. We'll see.
How about Mears' HR... that ball was SMOKED!!! Can't believe that kid on the OF berm caught it!

I saw a Tweet from Guerrero’s agent that said he was “throwing hard and worked his butt off” and on his way to Padres camp.Says he’s gonna “stay and make his debut this year”.
This is the same agent that Jeremy Jeffress is crediting with ruining his chance in Washington.
So for what it’s worth.....

Quote from fenn68 on March 11, 2021, 4:48 pm17 ST games remain ... time to start stretch out the starters and hone in on the real candidates for those last bench slots ... position and relief pitchers.
Not sure the “usual suspects” for the final position slot are winning the role ... most are losing their chance.
1. O’Grady .... 0 for 13 with 7 K and not playing much CF (mostly 1B/RF)
2. Mateo ... 6 for 16 with only 2 K may be in the lead ... has been working exclusively in the OF (and CF) ... but his base running has been underwhelming (2 CS) and that is his primary calling card.
3. Ona ... 2 for 12 with 5 K ... not much of a fielder and realistically should be starting in the minors.
4. (Non-roster) Castillo ... 0 for 9 with 2 K
5. (Non-roster) Tanielu ... 3 for 13 with 1 K
6. Marcano ... 7 for 14 with 5 K is a good showing but not sure would want a quality prospect the be the last man on the bench and not play ... should be in the MiL.
I would probably give Mateo the inside track (considering no minor league options) BUT would not be surprised if the Padres scoured with waiver wire or engineered a trade for an upgrade.

Quote from Brian Connelly on March 11, 2021, 10:28 pmIf it were a normal season, might start Kim at AAA if he didn't heat up some so he could get max AB. But since no AAA until May, he's a roster lock. If he's scuffling when AAA starts, it's not impossible Marcano would get the call with Kim going to get on track.
Unlikely, but possible

Quote from Brian Connelly on March 11, 2021, 10:31 pmHold your breath on Grisham.... "slight" hamstring exited game early.
Easily the thinnest position for Pads. So far Mateo is WAY ahead of O'Grady, but since O'Grady can be optioned that's OK, actually better.
Pads website pointed out not to discount the value of his speed with the extra innings "guy on 2nd" rules in place.

Quote from fenn68 on March 12, 2021, 4:40 amHamstrings being what they are .... keeping Grisham out of the line-up in ST until 100% would be prudent ... can’t risk making it worse and having him out for months.
Think Profar as the first option if this becomes a longer term situation.

Quote from fenn68 on March 12, 2021, 4:50 amKim is a tough call. Can argue that he would get more work to settle in at the alternate site working sim games ... will not get those ABs on the bench / road games.
17 games left in ST ... so a lot of time.
