Spring Training 2021

PreviousPage 11 of 17Next

A lot depends on how long they envision Lamet in the IL ... if it is only until mid-month ... not likely they need to think past Morejon and go with the extra RP over a “6th starter type”.

Although a 6th starter (spot starter) seems logical at some point during the season .. not an absolute need in April. Seven games ... off day ... then a long run of games. So could go with the 5 with the first two returning on “normal feast” then effectively all 5 pitch their next starts on “extra” rest before returning to “normal rest” ... a good length of time to see Lamet’s status.

Withe the extra RP coupled with none of the SP have been truly extended yet in ST and a desire not to overuse that arms (e.g. lots of pitches) right out of the blocks ... might just see some shorter starts out of the five allowing them to return for the next start fresher.

Not sure if any non-roster RP have done well enough to be added .... but that is a possibility ... coupled with the potential for Guerra to go on the 60 day IL since has yet to pitch.

40-man is full, but a few spots at the bottom readily available for Gore.  Biggest thing with Gore is they really want him to work as a SP only, seem more willing to have Weathers come out of pen.

In addition, everything that I have read is that once Gore comes up they want it to be permanent. So maybe that also plays into it as well.

Tiny sample, but Nabil Crismatt threw today & looked really good.   4 G, 6.0 IP, 2 H 0 R, 0 BB, 7 K.  Usually later innings = minors guys, but still..

And a decent MLB debut with St Louis last year:  6 G, 8.1 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 2 HR, 1 Intl BB, 8 K = 3.24 ERA, .200 BAA, 0.84 WHIP

Options left.  Not sure why they let him go.   Full time SP 2017-2019, so can go > 1 IP, which might be the most important factor of all this bullpen.

Anyone else excited about Espinoza going tomorrow? Certainly not going to get my hopes up but how cool would it be for this young guy, our former number 1 prospect, to actually go out there, get some major leaguers out, and not have his arm fall off?

If he can stay healthy, he becomes another piece of the puzzle.

I am. Hope the guy finally can stay healthy so he can realize the potential that got him the top prospects projection.

Even if healthy, Padres will still probably to ramp him up carefully over the full 2021 ... maybe in a “controlled” RP role in AA (maybe A+ to start).

If he clicks in 2021 .... could see him making a run for a RP slot with the Padres in 2022.

I though about him too for that 9th RP who can go multiple innings. I believe he was a 6 year minor league FA so STL apparently did not want to put him on their 40 man over the winter (or offer him a decent minor league deal). Just turned 26, so not one of those 30 year olds that have been bouncing around for a decade.

90 MPH FB with a curve and slider ... primarily a SP in the minors. Wonder if he could be one of those pitchers that has the basic stuff to start but is better suited for short relief roles. Not likely a late inning guy but a 5th-6th innings could be a fit.

=====

Also thought about Russ Knehr ... a legit Padres’ prospect who did start in 2019 but is viewed as a legit potential RP in the majors. 24, drafted in 2018, in 2019 did start in LE.

Has looked good in ST ... might be too soon for him but if the Padres see him arriving soon ... might let him fill that 9th RP role until Lamet / Strahm return.

Pads option Mason Thompson to AAA, Jordan Humphreys & Reggie Lawson to AA.

Guessing they've probably also "re-assigned" some of the NRI P's we haven't seen yet, but doesn't mean much with no Minors camp.  They would all still just be "there" with the original group.

Looks as though the sent about 24 to minors camp ... no real surprises.

Apparently they are letting Abrams and Marcano stick in ML camp for the duration (they deserve it).

Of the non-roster arms remaining still have Crismatt, Knehr, Valdez, Diaz, Camarena, Northcraft, Ramirez, Guerrero. Katoh, Tanielu, Florimon, and Rivas are still there for position players.

Still need some subs for the next week and a half and not overwork the expected ML roster.

Might have missed someone.

Yeh, no idea where they go if not in ML camp and MiL camp does not open for a couple of weeks (I think) plus some are likely "alternate site" players ... wherever that may be. Doubt they want to send them home for two weeks and risk COVID exposure.

Sounds as though Pierce Johnson has a "grade 1" groin strain ... no idea how long he will be out. Might he an IL candidate to avoid him "upgrading" that strain and be lost for a long time?

Also, heard Adams has some sort of aliment ... no idea.

Beginning to looks as though one of the remaining non-roster RP will get a shot (maybe two).

Not a great outing from Paddack today, was hoping to see better than 1 plus inning, and giving up 4 ernies.
