San Diego Padres at Toronto Blue Jays: May 20-22
Quote from Alex Tamayo on May 22, 2025, 2:01 pmQuote from WindsorUK on May 22, 2025, 11:41 amJust when you think things are looking up, we go down by 2.
Very next inning, we go 1-2-3, all via the K.
Did somebody shag somebody else's wife/girlfriend???????
That doesn't appear to be a cohesive team out there.
Well, there is barely any smiles out there, that is for sure, this season could turn very ugly, very fast. Every year when the team has a bad stretch I can't help to think and appreciate how good was the '98 team, it's so crazy to think that they didn't get swept through the whole regular season.

Quote from fenn68 on May 22, 2025, 3:57 pmDid a look at the past 30 days (not counting today) where the Padres had an un-inspiring 11-13 record after an outstanding start.
The one good was the SP (based on 3.20 ERA) was the 5th best in the ML.
However, the RP that was lights out early in the season sunk to 27th with a 5.88 ERA. Did they get burned out or did we mis-read their skill?
Can't forget the offense ... down to 24th with a wRC+ of 89.
Never like to make panic moves (and really don't have any call-up worth a move) after even this bad a 30 days ... so need to run this out a bit more and just hope the original view of the top 6 bats returns.
If the top 6 don't produce ... not going to find better at this point ... so going to be a bumpy ride.

Quote from fenn68 on May 22, 2025, 4:05 pmStats are a game of pick and choose to prove a point, at times. Using Machado, his slash line and 134 wRC+ are the best on the club for the past 30 days BUT for a team leader batting 3rd in the line-up (behind Tatis and Arraez) had only 1 HR and 10 RBI ... that is bad. Then flip that and Bogaerts has a poor 82 wRC+ but 3 HR and 15 RBI. Who is more productive for the team?

Quote from fenn68 on May 22, 2025, 4:15 pmOK when does someone abandon theory in the face of reality? Thinking here Tatis leading off and Arraez batting 2nd.
Know the theory of Tatis being a disruptor out of the lead-off slot, ability to change the course of the game in the 1st with a HR or stealing bases. Shildt and the Padres have bought into that theory.
Reality in the past 30 days .... Tatis 1 SB (2 CS), a poor OBP of .307, and yes 4 HR but only 10 RBI given no one on base from the bottom of the line-up. He is NOT matching the theory. On the other hand, Arraez is delivering a .345 OBP with a fair amount of 2B/3B to get into scoring position. Plus he rarely strikes out (get a ton of pitches) where Tatis has had his K rate rise.
So at what point does Shildt abandon theory and flip Arraez ant Tatis to get more on-base to lead-off and more punch behind him (maybe a 2 run HR?).
Of course if you want the best OBP bat with no power ... Machado to lead-off? Just kidding.

Quote from MrPadre19 on May 22, 2025, 5:06 pmIn an ideal world we are able to swing a trade for a speedy, good OBP left fielder who can lead off.
Solve several issues in one move.
Don’t know who….or for what….but do we really just want to add a LF who isn’t good enough to hit above the#8 hole?

That pulled in infield thing gets me almost every time. Other than last inning, runner on 3rd being the game winner, less than 2 outs, you should NEVER pull in the infield. If the ball isn't hit directly at an infielder, there is zero chance of throwing out a runner at the plate. A truly outdated concept.

I guess over the course of the season, we know Manny will put up the numbers. Bogaerts, although a little more productive than normal( and than Manny) will most likely not.
Thinking outside the box, we've not discussed Xander in the leadoff spot. Is there any reason to think he could be a more useful bat at the top? Move everyone else down a spot?

Merrill seems a prototypical 3 hole hitter. And putting Manny in the 4 hole( your big run producer) is a no brainer.
Certainly worth a try!

I think even Shildt thinks that way, but having Tatis at the top of the order changes the whole complexion of the batting order.
