Merrill seems a prototypical 3 hole hitter. And putting Manny in the 4 hole( your big run producer) is a no brainer.
I think even Shildt thinks that way, but having Tatis at the top of the order changes the whole complexion of the batting order.
When they’re hitting
Guess if they aren’t hitting it doesn’t really matter though…

But not in a good way over the past 30 days.

I know, what I mean is that if you prefer to go with Tatis first (apparently Shildt and company does), then you almost obligated to go lefty, righty, lefty after that, setting up Machado as 3rd and Merrill as 4th, otherwise if you want Merrill as 3rd and Machado as 4th but don't switch Tatis and Arraez, then you have Righty, Lefty, Lefty Righty, giving the opponent a chance to throw a lefty in the later innings in a crucial situation vs Arraez and Merrill, something like that happened yesterday, they had Merrill, Sheets and Cronenworth lined up because of the RHP starter, but when the bullpen came in, they brought in Fluharty (LHP), and he just navigated those 3 outs like nothing.

Approx?

Maybe if we can answer a different question, we could know, how many games does he hit in the last Padres frame with two outs? Anybody up for a homework? 🙂

Probably should add when the game is on the line (e.g. tied on one run behind).
Guessing not often enough to care vs all the other ABs.
