San Diego Padres at Cincinnati Reds: June 27-29

PreviousPage 2 of 3Next

Preller and the Padres in recent years "go for it" in trying to make the playoffs ... so unlikely they make any "sell" deals of established players unless they are well out of playoff contention (not likely the way they sit and the way the rest of the league is playing).

The challenge will be finding some offense support for LF and maybe DH vs LHP (Sheets really struggles there). Padres are 12th in the NL in OPS ... 13th AWAY from PETCO vs other teams AWAY performance. That is a bit telling since it minimize the HOME park differences ... more neutral comparison.

Not seeing clear impactful hitters rumored on the market (can't add what is not there) so maybe more fringe adds or a gamble on a prospect coming for some help? Not sure what prospects the Padres have (and are willing to trade) that another team values for a decent 2025 bat?

Going to be harder for Preller this deadline than other years given the nature of the needs and the minimal trade chips.

Game 2 Lineup
1. Arraez DH
2. Machado 3B
3. Merrill CF
4. Tatis RF
5. Bogaerts SS
6. Sheets LF
7. Iglesias 2B
8. Cronenworth 1B
9. Maldonado C

We need this first one…Pitching match up in game 2 worries me.

And I was worried about game two.

Which I still am.

And minimal payroll to add….presumably

Sheets didn’t struggle today against the LH

Whew! Padres don't make these games an easy watch. Fall behind ... come back ... hang on in tense 9th. Love the win ... but could use a few SD blowout wins for my health.

Yep on Sheets and I am really surprised on his defense in LF ... maybe freeing up Preller to just seek a bat ... not necessarily a LF. I guess he could look for a DH rental ... that should be a really cheap (in terms of trade chips) given not a great market for that profile.

He did pay RF for the CWS (not rated well) but delivering in LF for the Padres. Actually looks better as a LF defensively than he did as a 1B. In the post-game he said he was working daily with the coaches on refining his LF defense ... so seems the Padres are considering that option.

Maybe the Preller hidden gem of the year ... plus a couple more years of low cost control will not hurt.

Padres comeback and take game 2.

The Dodgers, Giants, and Dbacks all lost. The Padres move back up to 2nd place and 6 games behind the Dodgers.

Lets tkase the series n the rubber match to tomorrow.

GO PADRES!

Poor attendance in CINN for a team in the playoff hunt (and having one of their best season in recent years). Did look at their home attendance for the year and they are 21st in Home attendance at 25,000 per game.

For comparison the Padres are 3rd at 42,383 per Home game.

I know a lot has to do with the opponent mix but as the visitor in Away games they draw ... 3rd best at 32,653 just behind the Cubs and well behind the LAD (Ohtani effect I guess).

Tough no decision for Kolek and the run tacked up against him. He only gave up 3 weak hits including that infield job that extended the 6th.

I could see the bringing in of Morejon vs DeLaCruz to get him to his weaker side and in that heat Kolek may have been fading plus Morejon has been brilliant over the past 17 appearances. Unfortunate that he did get a ground ball (not hit all that hard) but eluded Iglesias at 3rd.

Time to get the offense in gear.

Side: Kolek has been outstanding on the Road ... sure looks like a factor in the rotation for years to come.

Is there any valid reason why Wade Is still on the team?
