The Padres head to Cincy to face the Reds, who are in last place in their division. The first game will be the Padres 81st game of the season and the end of the first half. They were 41-40 last season at this time. They will be facing former Padre NMart in game 1. The Padres have not lost a season series to the Reds since 2019 including sweeping them in 2022.

The Padres are 6 games back of the Dodgers, 1/2 game ahead of the Giants in 2nd place and 3 games ahead of the Dbacks. The Padres were 8 games back of the Dodgers at 81 games last season.

The Reds have scored more HR, runs, and RBI on the road than at home. Elly De La Cruz leads his club on HR(18), RBI(55) and SB(21), but also leads in strike outs(89). Shutting him down and the Padres offense needing to come alive and score is the key to winning this series.

Top NL West games: Dodgers(51-31)at Royals(38-43), Giants(44-37) at White Sox(26-55), Dbacks(41-39) host Marlins(34-45)

Ryan Bergert place on 15-dayn IL for right forearm contusion. That hurts. He is one of out best pitchers. I hope Darvish will be activated.

And I was worried about game two.

Which I still am.

Wuff! Cease had zero command and the Reds were not chasing ... hitters had nothing going for themselves.

Always looking for a positive .... Morgan and Reynolds looked strong.

Side: Cease, King, and Arraez are all FA after the season ... all are not doing enough for getting their mega FA deals.

Cease with inconsistency and an ERA over 4 is not compelling ... King's injury in his 2nd year of starting should put a bit of caution in FA suitors ... Arraez hitting sub-.300 with little power is not going to attract a ton of teams on a major contract.

Cease is in all likelihood gone ... but King / Arraez may depend on their contract demands (and what they see during FA). If King does comeback in the second half and excels he likely is priced out of the Padres. I betting Arraez does not find many interested teams and has little chance of maintaining his $14MM contract level as a somewhat limited 1 WAR 1B/DH.

The Padres did not look good tonight and came very close in the 9th to be no hit. Cease was terrible. He had nothing on his pitches.

Let's hope Vasquez can get it done and they can get to Abbott tomorrow.

GO PADRES!

Padres drop back into 3rd place and 7 games back.

Our boy Nick Martinez looked great! Granted, our offense sucks but still, carrying a no-no into the 9th is good pitching.

Yeah, Cease's days in San Diego are numbered. He's just not good enough, frequently enough, to pay top dollar to. Hopefully someone will be desperate and hope they get Good Cease for their playoff/WS run. As they say " there's a sucker born every minute"

Get to work AJ! Heat up those phone lines! Get Cease(and Suarez and Arraez) packing whilst you can still get something for them!

When (IF) Darvish, Bergert, and King return ... hopefully all by the end of the All-Star break ... that could (should) put Cease on the trade block at the deadline. Hopefully he has some "decent" starts prior to improve his trade value ... as it is a "rental" would would cost around $5-6MM in remaining contract and and ERA north of 4 is not going to generate a great return.

Not sure this helps his market ... his ERA at PETCO (8 starts) is a great 2.76 BUT Away (9 starts) it is an abysmal 6.31. However if other teams FO discount two Away games (4/8 and 6/16) when he yielded 15 runs over 9 innings his Away ERA in the other 7 games is a respectable 4.14. That with the Home ERA should be enough to make him a fair trade target.

A Cease trade opens up starting slots for one of the returning IL pitchers and should yield a decent prospect (even if not impact in 2025). Not knowing the money status for the Padres ... clearing about $5-6MM payroll may make it "easier" to make a deadline add who also is carrying a larger salary using marginal prospect(s).

I guess on the flip side ... if not getting a good return ... keeping Cease in the rotation given that dominant Home ERA and a decent Away ERA (w/o those two starts) allows "insurance" with Kolek / Bergert either in AAA or in the pen (think injuries). Pivetta, King, Cease, Darvish, and Vasquez could win them games and into the playoffs.
