Should comment on Gage Workman who they got in the Mize trade and activated (optioned Duran). LHH SS/3B (but has played the OF) ... age 26.

Seems to be the LHH/INF version of Bowen in the RHH/OF role. Athletic and can steal bases, play good defense, has power BUT has a low hit skill with a high K rate. Was hitting well in AAA (International league).

Last year the Cubs took him in the Rule 5 ... then traded him to the CWS who later returned him to DET ... so some other teams see at least something in his skill set. Has minor league options and probably now slots well ahead of Wagner and McCoy as INF call-ups (neither of them can hit either).

Likely optioned when (if) Andujar returns.

He sure "looks" like a ballplayer.

Has size and athlticism like Merril.

Maybe a coach somewhere can unlock something in him

Looks as the new set-up for SP (looking at the pasts 30 day performances):

  1. Ray ... 1.29 ERA / 21 innings / 5+ per start
  2. Vasquez ... 1.59 ERA / 17 innings / starting and relief
  3. Mize ... 3.00 ERA / 15 innings / 5 per start / DET skipped him from his last start
  4. King ... 3.21 ERA / 28 innings / 5+ per start
  5. Buehler ... 7.25 ERA / 22 innings / less than 5 per start

Even if they fall a bit back ... that #1 through #4 is going to set-up a lot of wins given the back end of the pen. Offense now is the critical path to actually getting wins.

IF (when) Musgrove or Pivetta are ready to return ... pretty clear that Buehler is out ... expect either one will do better even if not up to past performance level. (actually think Sears would be better now than Buehler).

With the pen in tact ... and Morgan and Adam in the wings for later call-ups ... that is a solid staff for a playoff run and have to think a starting three of Ray, Mize, King has the chance to advance the Padres in the playoffs.

Heard a report that Sheets is dealing with plantar fasciitis ... is wearing a boot away from the game and Padres are trying to keep him off his feet as much as possible.

Given his hitting struggles recently (may or may not be related) ... would an IL list ... and total rest ... help him and the team with an able body replacement? Note that plantar fasciitis can be a lingering injury.

Maybe this relates to Preller attempt to land a LHH at the trade deadline ... don't see anyone in house as a LHH (Wagner just not hitting). Also maybe links to the inclusion of Workman in the Mize trade.

IF (when) Andujar returns ... although RHH ... might be the excuse to IL Sheets. Good thing Preller found Rengifo as a switch-hitter who can play some LF/DH ... and doing better than expected.

The Padres announced that left-hander Robbie Ray has been added to the active roster after being acquired in a trade with the Giants earlier this week. In a corresponding move, right-hander Germán Márquez has been designated for assignment.

Anyone else a little geeked up about seeing Mize in SD brown on the mound tonight?

Take the last two in AZ, and really make some moves in the WC standings!

The Padres have an opportunity to move into the 3rd wild card spot. They still have an opportunity to take the NL West Title. The Dodgers were just swept by the Cubs. Their second straight sweep. The play the Dbacks next. A Padres win would move them 9 behind the Dodgers.

UH OH.....

Did I read correctly that the D-Backs will be starting a ROOKIE tonight?

We're screwed!

😂
