Morejon is a legit prospect ... young (20) ... and given the other pitching prospects in the near term window ... sending him down in 2019 burns one option year for only about a month back in the minors. Next year he is likely to be optioned again (2nd option year). In an era where having the flexibly to move pitchers up and down during the season to keep the ML pen "rested" ... sending him down seems short sighted (as maybe the adding to the 40 man when they did not have to now). He may need the full 3 option years to fully reach his potential and still be only 23-24 when out of options. Something that should be considered.

Quote from fenn68 on August 8, 2019, 6:16 amWho is HOT and who is NOT ... small sample size warning ... over the past 30 days:
Mejia ........... 57 AB ... 333/377/526 ... 11K (19%)
Hedges ........ 33 AB ... 182/263/394 ... 13K (39%)
They will continue to share the catching duties since catchers no longer play every day but the front office has to be really concerned that Hedges can’t get his offense together ... great defense can only go so far.
====
Naylor ........ 28 AB ... 321/333/571 ... 6K (21%)
Myers ......... 54 AB ... 278/339/407 ... 20K (37%)
Renfroe ...... 78 AB .... 179/253/321 ... 29K (37%)
More time for Naylor at the expense of Renfroe? Renfroe the RF version of Hedges?
An encouraging element from Mejia and Naylor is their K% vs. the others. All present major flaws ... extremes in offense v defense. (Note did not include Margot since he is a CF ... but he too is hitting better than early in the season with plus defense).

He has never struck me as a streaky hitter.
Never expected him to bat .300......but a consistent .250 ?

Here's the link ... https://www.baseballprospectus.com/news/article/52224/between-the-lines-chasing-upside-in-san-diego/ ... it's not a free article.
Two excerpts ...
The show of faith in Renfroe and the Machado signing both show a preference in San Diego for players whose strong bats are balanced with excellent defense, and perhaps more broadly represent the club trying to thread a needle – between upside and the floor – with players whose athleticism and instincts give indication of how they’ll make good on their promise. That’s the upside with Trammell – a first-division major leaguer for numerous years. If you think Reyesis maybe more a first-division DH or first baseman in a few seasons, it makes sense why San Diego chose to move him. It’s the same logic of the trade for Francisco Mejia.
...
The path I glean from most of the Padres’ moves over the past year and change is evident: construct not just a team that can make the playoffs, but a team that can, player for player, top to bottom, compete with the very best. It’s a delayed plan, but one the team has given enticing glimpses into this season as the front office tries to compete in the near term and thrive in the long term.

I am glad Preller is listening to me 🙂
Castillo is activated but not sending down Morejon ... strategically going to the 10 day IL not using an option year. Just keep him there until Sept 1 ... activate him when the rosters expand ... no harm / no foul.

Quote from fenn68 on August 9, 2019, 7:43 amPre-season, Padres were projected by most national media as a team that would be slightly under .500 ... looking at the past 30 days "stats" seem to reflect that view. In the NL:
Hitting: wRC+ 8th (107) ... note the improvement in OBP to 6th (.340) non-pitchers
Fielding: dWAR 4th ... again showing how bad defense is in baseball if frustrated with Padres defense
Pitching (overall): WAR 6th / ERA 8th; Starters 10th / 12th; Relievers 1st / 5th. If you are frustrated with the Padres' pen ... be gland you are not fans of teams in the rest of the league (RP is bad across the board).
We will see how the next two months go ... but compared to the last couple of seasons ... Padres have shown (and are showing) marked improvement.

Quote from 3fingersplit on August 9, 2019, 4:48 pmEverybody gets so caught up in numbers and crazy stat categories.....How about the amount of games that have been lost based on Manager game decisions or line up decisions......How close would this team be to .500 or in the hunt for a single game post season ( Wild Card ) ?
Nobody wants to talk about it because it's the big elephant in the room but........ it is there and if Players, GM and Owners are accountable then certainly the Manager should be held to the same standard

I think the biggest difference is the bullpen situation early on, them struggling at the time cost us at least 4 games, we would probably be at the. 500 mark, and right there fighting for a wc spot
