Quote from fenn68 on June 15, 2019, 6:11 amSame with me ... went to bed with the Padres way behind and shocked at the result this morning.
I have been converted on Renfroe given his 2019 season ... will never get enough in return to cover his value to the Padres, so he should be a keeper.
Primarily as a result of Renfroe, LF for the Padres is 4th best (WAR) in the NL, best defensively, and 7th best offensively. If you evaluate player performance in context of the league comparison by position ... might just come up with a different feel on a player's value. Renfroe may be that case.
Should note that Padres only have 3 positions that are sitting in the Top 5 WAR in the NL ... 4th (LF), 4th (RF), and 1st (SS) ... need those top 5 slot to contend. The Machado / Tatis combo at SS has really been working. The surprise to be was RF (Reyes / Renfroe) given Reyes' poor defense and he had about 75% of the RF innings. Expect that 3B will jump up for its current 8th place (dragged down by France while Machado was at SS).
So, where to focus on improvement ... no surprise, 2B (Kinsler / Garcia) is 12th in the NL but we can hope Urias can return and improve that (his defense alone will help). 1B (Hosmer) is 12th driven by being 12 in dWAR ... offense is a more normal 8th ... but he is going nowhere. Then there is C (Hedges / Mejia / Allen) sitting a 9th but that is a product of extremes ... defense is #1 but wRC+ is #15 (dead last in the NL).
Surprisingly better than I expected is CF (Margot / Myers) is sitting at 8th (8th offense / 7th defense) ... a tribute I guess to how poor other CF are in the NL.
Overall the Padres are 9th in the NL WAR ... 11th in wRC+ and 4th in dWAR. So, clearly offense needs improvement and getting Tatis back to SS and Machado back to 3B will help and hopefully Urias to 2B. Sticking with Myers in CF over Margot will help offensively. Is all that enough to offset the lack of offense from Hedges? Do the Padres give up some defense at C for needed offense? Can either Allen or Mejia actually provide more offense?
More than 3 months to go to answer these and more questions.

Me too! I literally stopped watching with 1 out in 9th right before everything happened!
So amazing how a comeback like that changes your outlook on everything. Loss = 6 in a row & time to sell. NOW...?
Pads have been like this all year... lose 4, win 5, etc

Quote from fenn68 on June 16, 2019, 10:21 amHave we over-reacted to Kinsler's ugly start (and locked in on it) and are ignoring his performance over the past two months? Consider:
April ... 72 AB ... 111/190/181 (.370 OPS) ... now that is really ugly
May .... 71 AB ... 254/303/521 (.824) ... very good for a 2B
Jun .... 42 AB ... 381/435/548 (.982) ... even better but unsustainable
36 year old veterans should settle near his history which is between the ugly and good so far but does give "cover" to the Padres not to promote Urias until they really think he is ready and will not need to be sent down again.
Side thought (if they really think Urias is ready to take over 2B) his May/Jun performance actually may make him a trade deadline chip if some team ends up needing a veteran 2B (Boston?) although more likely the keep him around until Urias proves his ML status.

Quote from fenn68 on June 16, 2019, 10:35 amTime to give A.Allen more playing time ... consider the month of June:
Allen ... 22 AB ... 318/400/364 .... .764 OPS
Hedges ... 31 AB ... 161/235/194 ... .429 OPS with an abundance of strikeouts
Don't think Hedges defensive edge offsets that total lack of offensive production plus that lackluster offensive production has been an issue for his career except for a few short bursts.
Yes, small sample size with Allen but he does have the prospect projection as a hitter and the Padres will only really know if he plays more. Basically phase Hedges into an equal or back-up role. If Allen struggles move the Mejia as the Hedges alternative.
I think it is time to really developing alternatives to Hedges ... a sub-.200 hitting catcher with a high K rates will not work on a contender no matter the defense unless the rest of the team is a power house (and that is not the Padres in the near term).

Because I live in PHX, I only listen to MLB on XM. I hear Alex Cora each week, and it seems that they are happy with Chivas at 2B. So I dont know if BOS will be looking to get back Kinsler; however, there should be some contender that may be looking to upgrade 2B. Maybe LAD with Seager out 6-8 weeks with the hamstring issue.

Probably will be the result of some team having an injury at 2B (or even a productive reserve).

Quote from WindsorUK on June 16, 2019, 12:56 pmOkay, all this talk about Renfroe being available for trade/ platoon need to STOP!
This dude is playing the best LF of anyone in the NL. HR number 22 today, puts him even with probable MVP Bellinger. I just can't believe he's not penciled in EVERY day in LF, and in the 4 or 5 hole.
Leave Myers in CF, as he's FAR superior to Margot. Obviously, if someone wants Wil, I'd be more than willing to listen.
I like Naylor but when Franmil is back to health, he's my 4 or 5 hitter and everyday RF.
Green REALLY needs to stop juggling his lineup. It was Bud's undoing as far as I'm concerned. Pick your 8 best and let them play.

Quote from BoosterSD on June 16, 2019, 1:02 pmWell, not one of the best Margevioousuosuos. He really needs to be sent down for the balance of the year. Cant get lefties out, cant get the opposing pitcher out. No business being on a ML mound for the balance of this year.
