If Hedges hit .220, 15-20 homers with his elite D, I would be fine with him as starter. I do have a problem when he hits .180, Ks all the time, doesn’t take walks, move runners over or make any adjustments and seems to be fine being an automatic out because he’s an elite defender.

So .231 with 14 homers with elite D would be Ok?
Those are his numbers from way back in 2018.
I get it...his offense in 19’ was horrendous.....but there’s more of a chance he “gets back” to .230 than there is Myers gets back to 30/30.
Or that Renfroe gets his OBP over .310.
Or Margot becomes the star everyone expected...etc.etc.
Point being.....When you are arguably the best defensive catcher in all of MLB...you should be given every opportunity to turn around one bad season with the bat.
IMO anyway.

That would be enough to stay with the team yes. But as a backup. Mejia is the future at catcher. Someone who can actually hit well, has average defense and an elite arm. I just don't know if Hedges will be satisfied with that. Whenever his contract is up I seriously doubt he will get a big new one from the Padres. He may have more value to another team who does not have options. I am fine either way; keep him or trade him.

I wouldn’t say it’s one bad season with the bat. He’s a career .202 with almost 1300 career ABs. His HR totals have dropped 3 years in a row. I don’t see Hedges making any adjustments with his swing and approach, do you? I mean he’s had that exaggerated uppercut for quite sometime and it seems pitchers have the book on him now as a hitter. He looks to pull everything and shows no discipline when it comes to pitch selection. His defense is top notch though and would be missed greatly if he’s moved. I just think if we want to see the offense improve Hedges has to go. I actually think all of your listed scenarios are more likely with the exception of Hunters OBP. I mean Margot put up a great rookie line and he put up absurd numbers against lefties this year while playing elite D in CF. It may be dumb, but Im still a believer in Margot. Myers has the talent to be a star, just not sure if he has mentality.

I have to agree with Tatis. Myers has never actually gone 30/30. He came very close twice, and I can see him going around 25/25 again. He has power and speed. He and Renfroe are among that new generation of hitters unfortunately. All or nothing. HR or strikeout. They will not change. They both have power and defense. Neither will ever give us a good OBP, but they still have value. Myers will get back to hitting up to his ability which is 20+/20+. Margot can give us a .260 10/20 type of year. Not saying he will but I would not bet against it. Hedges has been here the longest. He isn't going to improve.

While talking about the OF and hitters, can we all agree on a couple of items. One, its the area of the Padres that needs the most improvement on the hitting side. Two, that Myers and Renfroe are pretty much the same player.
So.....
Im going back the thought that Naylor needs to go back to AAA. He only hit 10 HRs in EP last season in 223 ABs. Let him play in LF ONLY!!! and develop his power.
Send Mejia to Winter Ball and have him play LF. We have plenty of catching prospects, he may never get better than average at C, and the couple of games that I saw him in the OF he seems better than Naylor.
Decide who gets traded, Myers or Renfroe. Neither is overly special and the same player IMO. Dont need two of these guys on the same team. The one that stays gets platooned in RF with someone like C. Dickerson, K Calhoun, or maybe Reddick if the price is right prospect wise for him. Or hopefully Cordero can stay healthy and contribute.
LF - Mejia, CF - Margot/Jank, RF - Myers/Cordero

Mejia is slow, as are all catchers. He will never be ideal in LF. He probably wouldn't be very much of an improvement over Naylor. When you find a catcher who can truly hit, you have struck gold! Mejia is a catcher. He should be left there. He makes our whole lineup much stronger being there. Any LF should be able to hit. You should never have to put a catcher there.

Not all catchers are slow, I think Jason Kendall and Craig Biggio would like to have words with you over that statement. 🙂 Mejia is not that good as a catcher. Can he get better, I hope. I think I saw improvement from last year, but it needs to get way better. My suggestion with Mejia in LF was to keep his bat in the line up IF you wanted to keep Hedges as the primary C. I dont think Mejia is as slow as Naylor, and IMO he would be better in LF than Naylor.

You are right, not all catchers are slow. Only about 90% of them are. And in reality Mejia is an average defensive catcher. Maybe even slightly above. Did you know that before his bat came alive he was considered a "defense first" catcher?
