Pre-2021 Planning

So, I see some logic in the Padres making a rule 5 pick (probably not a pitcher) just to expand the ST options and as a buffer until they actually sign some "better" bench options which likely will lag to near ST.

I agree.  Non-zero chance with bench SO wide open.  Remember, teams often end up retaining these guys in their system via trade with the original team when they decide to "return" the player. Happened to us last year when we "traded" RP Trevor Megill to Cubs permanently when instead of having him returned to us (probably just kept R5 $).  In essence, good chance you can "buy" some minors depth.

But still very unlikely; Pads are at very end of the draft, and I think teams will protect their prospects against raiding more than they will protect the many MLB players about to get Non Tendered.  Basically zero chance of P or C.

Low chance but remember Preller found Cordoba, Torrens, and Diaz way deep in the organizations that did not protect them. Padres now are different than Padres then but clearly have the skills to turn over every rock ... so they might like someone who is still there in the late picks. So for a look in ST ... why not.

I guess another consideration is that Ona can be (and maybe should be) working full time in the minors so a 26 man roster spot is seeking a fill. Also, although a Rule 5 has to be kept in 2021 (but can be optioned in 2022) maybe should consider that Mateo, Garcia, and Allen have no options ... so little flexibility long term. Could argue that if the stumble across a Rule 5 that is as good as Mateo, Allen, or Garcia (none that good) ... might have a longer term benefit.

Worth a shot.

The third base coaching hire will be important. It will be interesting to see who Tingler hires.

Are Allen and Mateo relatively the same: fast guys, decent gloves, no hit? Are EITHER of them worth keeping?

If I recall correctly, they are similar in the fact that they are defense/speedsters with little to no bat. They differ because Mateo can play both INF and OF but if RHH only, and Allen is OF only but a switch hitter.

Dont think there is room for both in SD; however, probably room for one, and IMO its Mateo due to the INF/OF option.

Early odds are on them staying internal and go with Bobby Dickerson.

Might depend a lot on who they can sign to replace either one (or both) covering CF and/or SS with some hitting skills.

If the Padres have to consider cost along with getting the upgraded skills ... might not be all that easy to a real upgrade ... maybe different but upgrade considering all the skills?

Probably easier to land an OF than a middle INF back-up ... so advantage Mateo.

Also, as it stands, probably the first add is targeted to supplant Ona (to AAA) who, as of now, is the back-up corner OF. Then many would non-tender Garcia ... if so, have to replace him. That mounts up to replacing four back ups ... possible but unlikely.

Also Mateo was once a top prospect.

Better chance that he will improve still than Allen.

Doubt either will improve much (if any).

An advantage for Allen (age 27) is that he has a career 618 PA with a 239/298/343 slash line. Maybe not great even for the bench but at least decent enough for a 4th OF based on defense / baserunning. Some minor upside consider in 2018 (291 PA) he had a respectively slash line of 257/310/343.

Mateo has the great speed and can play INF but he is 25 and just got his first taste of MLB after a long minor league run of high expectations. Has value on the bench but don’t see him having much of a future offensive presence.

I guess they could live with either one (or both) if the upgrade for Ona has the right versatility with an offense skill set and if that applies to an upgrade for Garcia.

I hope they are looking for a RHH bat (or two) to fill for Ona and Garcia .... PH duties and maybe a strategic sub for Cronenworth vs tough LHP.

Rule 5 rosters are set on Friday ... two open roster slots.

So, no additional moves ... now ... if they only have two prospects they want to protect. They may make more slots open later if (unlikely) the want to make a Rule 5 selection.

Most seem to think of the 38 on the roster ..... some are easy DFA candidates but do they need (want) to keep them in reserve to open if they sign a FA or make a trade that adds to the 40 man. Remember it is easier for another team to claim (and keep) a rostered DFA prospect than selecting (and keeping) that same player via Rule 5 ... a case for not protecting the "marginal" prospects and clogging up the 40 man.

Marcano and Lawson as Top 10 prospects seem to leaders for those two open slots. Beyond that?
