Pre-2021 Planning
Quote from Randy Manese on November 2, 2020, 9:52 amSigning Kendrick, as Ben Davey suggests, or other oldies such as Todd Frazier or Kurt Suzuki is one route to explore but would any take a 3-4 M cut from 2020 levels to play for San Diego? If that's where the market is, then that's the most logical place to go to build an experienced short term bench for 2021. I think we'll be on the fringes for position player adds through Free Agency - maybe by trade by bundling some of our excess pitching, although not our top prospects since we are only looking for depth beyond Mejia and possibly one of Garcia/Mateo/Allen.

Quote from Jeremy Hill on November 2, 2020, 10:07 amI would like to see the team go after some lefty killers for the bench. We know Hosmer can't hit lefties and Cronenworth struggled against them too. It was a small sample size for Jake, but it would be nice to have a contingency in place if he continues to have problems with lefties.
I think Kike Hernandez would be a perfect fit as a lefty killer who's also CF capable. I also like the idea of a Gyorko reunion. Wilson Ramos could be interesting too depending on the results of the Campusano situation. We could take advantage of Nola's versatility against lefties with him on board. I don't think any of them will cost much, but they could have a big impact by improving the lineup against lefties and letting us play the matchups late in games.
Pitching wise I think we're fine in the rotation. If anything maybe you gamble on a bounce back deal for someone like Kluber or Paxton. If it's not someone with top of the rotation upside I would rather just roll with our internal options.
Bullpen wise I think we look to add or retain a quality option or 2. Looks like there will probably be a lot of relievers forced to settle for cheaper deals which should be good for us.

Quote from BoosterSD on November 2, 2020, 10:14 amDepending on cost, I would look to sign both Kendrick and Galvis. With Galvis replacing Garcia. Galvis IMO, offers a better bat than Garcia, more pop and a switch hitter, plus Galvis can still play SS, so he can give Tatis an occasional day off as well. So he could be a nice RHH option should Jake C not be able to adapt to hitting LHP. And Kendrick would also be a nice RHH option for Hosmer on the days that we face LHSP, and then Cronenworth and Hosmer both become nice late inning PH options via a RHRP.
Fenn, saw the same piece of MLBTR, and I agree that Hamels would have to be a very small base with incentives. And I would hope that the market is weaker than they believe, and we could get Rosenthal over Yates. Yates obviously has a place in our hearts, but do we really need to start 2021 with health questions on two starters in Clev and Lamet, and our top closer??
I think Mejia is still a question mark both bat and defense wise. I would have no problem with him starting 2021 in AAA, and signing a vet C in the lines of a Mathis, Wieters, or a Castro maybe if the dollars are right.
And I still think that Pilar can be signed as the RHH CF back up as well. Although, if you are looking for a late inning defense replacement and an occasional day off for Grisham, you could chance it with either Allen or Gettys, who I would still give a chance in ST.
I think that SD ownership, even despite some of the lay offs they have made, will not scrimp too much on the opening day payroll, and try to pad 2021 for another run, with other external funds.

Quote from fenn68 on November 2, 2020, 10:18 amAfter looking at the FA signing predictions, made me think of some potential (but unlikely) juggling within the constraints of the $10MMish add.
- Consider Profar (will be 28) is projected (to Detroit) at $7MM / 1 year coming off a career year but a very versatile switch-hitter who actually looked quite good defensively in LF while providing back-up value in the INF and OF. Then consider Pham (will be 33) is projected to get an arbitration deal for $8MM / 1 year to FA coming off an injury damaged season (will he rebound to earlier performance) and a poor defender limited to LF. Would it make sense to non-tender Pham and re-sign Profar ... in the process of saving $1MM to deploy elsewhere? Both realistically have risk. Also, on Profar, could they get a better AAV if they signed him on a 2 year deal considering there is little to bet on coming to replace Pham in 2022?
- Consider signing Cesar Hernandez (30), 2B, projected #37 at $6MM /1 year ... RHH. Contact hitter with high OBP (Padres current model) and had a 106 OPS+. Fund him by not signing Hamels for $4MM ... the $1MM Profar / Pham savings and then he fits in the $10MM bucket with Yates.
Profar, Hernandez, and Yates > Pham, Hamels, and Yates? Maybe when the Padres have arms and are short on position players.
====
Note: not really all that interested in signing Hernandez for $6MM as a part time player .... but could use that $6MM and fortify a back-up OF since as it is ... it is Allen / Mateo .... then Ona.

Quote from WindsorUK on November 2, 2020, 3:01 pmAs Hoffy and Fenn have both stated, not resigning Moreland a 100% no-brainer.
And I'm inclined to agree that Garcia has had his last AB as a Padre.
With Perdomo going dowm with TJ, he's definitley DFA material, as is I think Wingenter. Guerra on the other hand is intriguing. If they harness that velocity.....
And I very much believe Mejia, if healthy, is our number 2 catcher in 2021, with Campusano getting full time duty in AAA, readying himself for full time employment in SD in 2022( or sooner should Nola go down)
As much a Howie Kendrick fan that I am, dude is 37 years old! Not sure I want a baseball senior citizen as my back up middle infielder. Really be an ideal spot for Cordoba, had he not missed so much time.
Problem I see with Myers getting time at 1B( which I'd be happy with as I thought Wil was outstanding with the glove his first year there- not so much his second year) is we no longer have any viable back ups in the outfield. Wil showed what he's capable of this year if a manager just puts him in RF every day, in the 6 hole. Just leave him alone. As exciting as it was to see AJ make all those trades, he really left the cupboards bare for the next few years in the OF( how many MLB or AAA/AA outfielders has he traded in the past 2 years?)
I don't see the need to spend any money on our bullpen. We brought in so many arms and have so many in the minors, we should have more than enough to be a solid pen next year, and beyond.
Good time to be a Padres fan.

Quote from fenn68 on November 2, 2020, 3:11 pmOne thing to remember about Guerra is that he is out of minor league options (as are a lot of the RHRP on the roster). Guerra would have to improve a lot to make the 26 man roster ... thus getting DFA at the end of ST. If they kept him ... one of the others gets DFA’d.
So, is it more strategic to DFA him now or DFA him after ST trying to get the best chance of having him clear waivers and retain his services.
For me, unless they need the 40 man slot during the winter, wait until ST and make the DFA as other teams are cutting down to 26 and probably not wanting to give him a 26 man slot.

Quote from MrPadre19 on November 2, 2020, 3:12 pmI will be very surprised if we don’t re-sign Profar.
I don’t think AJ traded for him thinking it would be only for 2020 first of all.
He’s an AJ guy.......and his versatility in OF and INF makes too much sense for us.
If(Gwynn forbid) something happens to Tatis...Jake goes to SS and Profar goes to 2b.
Profar takes Garcia’s spot.
I don’t care that Kendrick is 37....he can still get on base and play 1b/2b/PH.
I’d love for him to be a Padre on a 1 year deal.
Another thought.....if we are seriously in on Bauer it would make me believe we won’t have both Clevinger and Lamet to start the season.
I would love to add him of course....but his signing would make me believe we aren’t so sure on the other two.
But man.....how great would a playoff rotation of Bauer/Lamet/Clevinger be?

Quote from fenn68 on November 2, 2020, 3:16 pmA bit of chicken vs. the egg situation with further cuts of position players (e.g. Garcia). Do they DFA Garcia before a replacement is in hand? Probably not.
Consider, right now they have with Garcia 14 position players to cover 13 slots on the 26 man ... already meaning Ona or Campusano are needed to fill the roster. IF they DFA Garcia ... then now BOTH Ona or Campusano make the 26 man.
As it stands, Garcia is the back-up INF and the LHH PH ... plus really does not cost all that much. He may not make the 26 man out of ST ... but need to find the replacement first.

Quote from fenn68 on November 2, 2020, 3:31 pmDon’t see the money for Bauer (as the #1 FA will get big payday) ... would add reading the chat on MLBTradeRumors they seem to see Bauer wanting very very high analytical approach to pitching (not sure Rothschild is that) and wanting to pitch every 4th day. Good for him maybe, but what does that do for the rest of the rotation? Basically, sign him and let him do what he wants.
