Poll: L or Q
Quote from Ben Davey on March 7, 2020, 8:55 pmI like the idea of using an opener for L. Toss Guerra or Munoz for the first 2 innings then switch to the soft tossing lefty. Q has the higher ceiling by far

If they had been starting somewhere they would at least be close to ready to start in SD.
What if we have multiple injuries to the rotation this year and are contending?
Maybe those two could have at least given us a few starts this year if they had been stretching out “last” year instead of this.As it is they may not even be ready next year.
There is no part of this post that makes any sense.

LOL...you mean the poll wasn't about Baez and Morejon ?
BTW- Ben nailed it....Q has a much higher ceiling

Quote from David Jay on March 7, 2020, 10:01 pmMostly, it ignores what was actually going on with Baez and Morejon last year.

Could work. Like that suggestion. Now would be the time to try it.

Quote from fenn68 on March 8, 2020, 5:35 amAgree that Quantrill has more POTENTIAL but in a year that the team wants to get out of the block strong to contend .... they have a PROVEN .500 pitcher (over his two years) and who was dominate at PETCO last year. a .500 pitcher out of the 5th slot is a good (see the #5s over the rest of the year). Add that he has PROVEN that he can go out for every start and eat innings which is a plus for the full staff.
Quantrill is not getting the #5 slot in 2020 based on better POTENTIAL (might have in a season where 90 losses were on the horizon). Not an equal battle ... the slot is Lucchesi's and Quantrill will have to demonstrate superior on field work over multiple appearances to unseat Lucchesi. Unlikely he has enough time in ST to show that. Quantrill to AAA.
However, it is a long season that will be cluttered with SP injuries and underperformance. Quantrill will be #1 on the SW express from El Paso early in the season. IF Lucchesi does not maintain his .500 performance level (not even considering improvement) ... will see him bumped at that time if Quantrill is impressive in the minors.

How about if Q just flat out has a better spring training than Luchessi because right now it's not even a contest in that regard ?
You would penalize a guy who pitched better in ST and keep the guy who is PROVEN but has flaws in his delivery and is trying to figure out a new pitch ?
That makes zero sense....you are trying to win games not let somebody experiment every 5th day and hope he figures it out because he's PROVEN. If Luchessi continues his ST struggles how does anybody justify keeping him up if Quantrill flat out wins the ST ?
If that's the case then how does anybody ever crack a rotation if everybody is PROVEN ? How did Paddack crack the rotation ?
He pitched better and knocked out a guy who was PROVEN
Personally I think we traded the wrong L but that's just me

Quote from fenn68 on March 8, 2020, 11:56 amQ has pitched only 4 innings is ST games ... not much of a sample size. Lucchesi only 4.2 innings ... not much of a sample size. Neither one is going to win (or lose) a starting slot based on that in ST. Lucchesi has the advantage of a 4.18 ERA in in 30 starts in 2019 vs. Quantrill's 5.16 ERA (5.69 ERA as a starter ... 18 starts). Quantrill has to earn that slot by pitching well over an extend run ...maybe in long relief or in AAA and potentially move back to a starting role for the Padres mid-season.
We don't know what is happening in the side sessions, back lot ... that probably is a bigger factor along with each getting 2-3 more ST appearances.
Last year Paddack was in the running for starting on a very bad team without a SP staff of any quality ... good grief Margevicius made the starting rotation ... the bar was very low for all 5 slots ... the bar is much higher in 2020.

Quote from 3fingersplit on March 8, 2020, 12:30 pmGiven that logic just send Quantrill down now as he clearly has no chance to make this stellar rotation and knock out a PROVEN #5 starter even if he has a better spring.....SMH
Quantrill had a 3.32 ERA before the train wreck last month of the season and Luchessi has never been close to that....just sayin and if you really needed to throw a lefty....Strahm or Pomerantz have done that. I get it that Luchessi is a lefty on a right handed staff so a little balance but at what expense ?
Bad outings that drops his trade value and cost this team wins in a season they could actually be over .500.......and the head games it plays on somebody else.
