Quote from BoosterSD on May 27, 2026, 6:29 pmWhen is it time to cut ties with Souza? How was it a good idea to hire someone that had no hitting skills as MLer, what makes him skilled enough to teach people what he couldnt do?
Thought it was a bad hire then, and it seems worse now!

Agree, even though, would guys like Machado, Bogaerts, Tatis even hear what he has to say? Or better question, guys like them actually hear what a hitting coach has to say? They have been there long enough to figure stuff on their own, haven't they?

I think that every good hitter has someone that can spot how they are just a little off. Same as in golf, the swing is always a constant adjustment. Not to mention, a good hitting coach can help a batter adjust to the way pitchers are throwing to them as well.
So, yes they have natural ability to hit, but when something is slightly off they need someone to notice and help with adjustments. I simply dont think that someone like Souza who was a below average ML hitter himself is the man for the job. Would Pujols be interested??

Whether they remain 3.5 games back or fall 3.5 games back depend on the results of the Dodgers/Rockies game tonight.
Why in the world did Stammen need to take out Buehler, who only had a 58 pitch count. He was outstanding today giving up no walks. Instead he brought in a lefty to face face lefty Schwarber, who hits lefties far better than righties.
One again the Padres offense could not get it done. They have the worst offense in MLB and are dead last in batting average.
On to DC to face the Nats.
Keep The Faith!
GO PADRES!
To watch what could have been with Abrams and Wood.....those dudes are fun to watch.

This should have been the choice the first time around.
Nothing against Stammen.

Doubt Pujols would "take a step down" to be just a hitting coach. Manager maybe but as a manager would not be coaching hitters.
Actually see limited value in hitting coaches for veteran players ... most don't listen or have their own advisors on their hitting. Actually in today's era of detailed analysis departments ... a bunch of folks in the back rooms do the analysis of swings / approaches and already pass that down to the players / coach. Not sure how much the hitting coach does on his own.
If finding a hitting coach that actually improved all the hitters was easy ... that would have been achieved long ago and teams would not have an ongoing merry-go-round of hitting coaches. The theory of impactful hitting coaches on veterans just does not play out on reality.
