Padres vs Rockies

I think the Craig Stammen experiment in San Diego has come to an end.

We obviously held onto him a year too long.

Maybe time to consider moving Kirby before he too falls off the cliff?

At least half of Tatis errors have come on plays that he had no chance at getting the guy at first, on the Stammen subject, How come Andy doesn't understand that Stammen should only be used on blowouts?

Yep, that's the thing with relievers, that is why there is only two guys with 600+ saves, therefore you cash in when their value is as high as it could be

Think Yates is the gamble they have to take ... if they want to contend in 2020 ... not ready to go with Munoz / Baez as the closer and without some semblance of reliability at the end of the game they will not contend.

If he fails ... not that big of a loss, doubt the prospect he would generate in a deal would be all that much of an upgrade of the prospects currently in the system. Don’t see why the buyers would be more confident in Yates than the Padres. So, in one sense, it would be like giving him away. IF the Padres are out of it mid-season ... Padres could move him then when a contender is under pressure to fill a closer role.

======

Agree that Stammen has burned out ... a lot may have to do with just overuse in 2018 and 2019 (plus getting older). The Padres seemed to have moved him out of the 8th inning / set-up Yates role (they see it too) but at the same time they in a bit of a bind with their “better” RP options being young arms they really don’t want to run out there in 50% of the games .. and the others (Reyes, et al) are not much better. So Stammen serves a short run purpose ... eats innings. FA after the season and time to move on.

=======

Did hear an interview with Green when he said that the early season approach of limiting the innings for SP is being transitioned to trying to go with longer outings. Clearly the ripple effect is conservation of bullpen arms ... theoretically making the pen more effective. Of course the SP have to cooperate and pitching efficiently enough to warrant going longer. (Can’t wait for the complaints about leaving a SP too long costing us a game ... should have gone to Stammen :))
