Padres vs. Rangers
Quote from fenn68 on August 18, 2020, 4:39 pmNot just the Padres ... but is sliding for a stolen base getting worse? Does anyone care?
Disliked the head first slide for some time but for the most part in the past the runner headed directly to the base and stopped.
Seems now that the idea is to head first slide away from the base and reach to touch it. The result is a much higher number of slides (even if they beat the tag) going past (well past) the base .. losing touch and getting tagged out.
Stats guys are probably on this somewhere ... but the success rate has to be down ... I know my frustration rate is up, way up.
Machado guilty in the 9th ... and Tatis on his successful excursion early also over slid the base. Isn't there some way to match a good technique with aggressive play?

Surprise ... Quantrill comes in for the save!
I will hold my breath.

Quote from fenn68 on August 18, 2020, 4:46 pmWe have found our closer for the rest of the season: Quantrill! 1 for 1 in saves
We have found our #5 SP "no hit" Morejon.
All is good in Padre land.

Quote from Randy Manese on August 18, 2020, 5:48 pmSo many times during this game that I thought Tingler brought on a defeat with his choice or pitchers and either taking them out to early or leaving them in too long. Quantrill saved him and we really needed this game. With 12 hits and 4 walks, we still should have scored more than 6 runs but Hosmer and France did not have it today. Liked what I saw of Naylor Machado and Cronenworth and some outstanding defensive plays by Machado, Tatis and Cronenworth. Morejon looks like he's healthy and can stay up. I'm a big Guerra supporter but he just hasn't had it the last couple of outings and now needs to be pushed way back in the bullpen rotation with Stammen, who actually did very well today. Patino just can't seem to locate his pitches like everyone thinks he should be able to do and if he can't handle the long role, then maybe Baez or Eickhoff can. It may be time to send him down.
Tough game tomorrow versus Lynn, so I hope Paddack and the offense are up to the challenge.

Quote from Brian Connelly on August 19, 2020, 12:49 amExhale... was dying that game. It seemed to go on forever, and reaffirmed: I HATE Bullpen games. The idea that you can turn to 7 guys inning by inning & every one of them will be "on" just fails the common sense test. It's flirting with disaster in so many ways. What if the game goes into extra innings? Why would we think this "strategy" would work with our near worst in MLB pen? I just don't get the "value" of these types of games unless it's a very specific situation like last game of season, day game before getaway & day off, etc. Seems like they just have the potential to destroy a pen we're already being careful with due to short build up time & compressed schedule.
Morejon was brilliant. WHY was he limited coming in to "2 innings", but then pulled at 3 IP < 40 pitches if he's been stretched out reportedly to 5 innings @ Alt site? What would have been the plan to get through 7 innings? Would have HAD to use Quantrill (more than 4 pitches) AND Patino... what would the plan have been for the next day? Just sort of don't get the "strategy" or uber caution with the SP going so well; especially being up 6-0... isn't that exactly what you want to happen?
Conceptually the idea of getting young SP's an extra day of rest (and, importantly, another bullpen session) has value, but not at the cost of being guaranteed to use up the whole pen.

Quote from 3fingersplit on August 19, 2020, 5:02 amThe Padres crack me up......they have two of the most highly rated guys in Gore and Patino so they throw Morejon 2 innings or whatever he threw great and was on. He looked like he belongs in a rotation somewhere. Was that a test to see if he could help or was that an audition for a trade?
Personally I would love to see a rotation of Paddack, Lamet, Gore, Patino, Morejon at some point? Could that ever happen ?
Just asking

How do you remove Davies?
Unless you're talking about 2022.
I have no issue with Gore coming up at some point this season but I think Morejon showed he can handle the #5 spot so no reason yet.
I would piggyback Morejon and Quantril for the #5 spot from this point forward.
But,if one is pitching lights out let him keep going....maybe the other guy/s won't have it that day?
They don't need their pitches limited "that much" that they can't go 4 innings each......
Morejon should not have been pulled until he showed signs of ineffectiveness....Tingler thought he could do this at the beginning of the season becuase everyone thought this Pen would be lights out.
It isn't.....so he can't....so ride the hot hand(arm) when you have one IMO.

Quote from fenn68 on August 19, 2020, 7:11 amWould expect 2022 (if there is a 2022) having a starting rotation built with Lamet, Paddack, Gore, Patino, Morejon, Weathers, or Cantillo ... pick 5. Except for Lamet, all are still short on experience and ML production. Since it does take time to actually turn potential into production at the ML level ... 2022 seems like a reasonable target IF the objective is challenging for the playoffs with these guys. Have to get "lucky" to accelerate the ML effectiveness to contender level in 2021.
Preller sure likes to push the envelope on bringing up prospects for development by challenging them.
So, Preller has a dilemma .... if the Padres were on track for another 90 loss season we would see the prospects now in starting roles. However, Padres making the playoffs in 2020 is important for them (I expect they see 2021 the same way). At what point do they move off two of the most effective starters (Davies, Richards) to take a gamble on prospects being effective out of the blocks? Padres are still legitimately in the playoff hunt in 2020 (and this is where the old saying that if a team makes the playoffs ... in short series and getting hot the team can win it all). How do you pass on that after 10 years of futility? If they fall out of contention maybe a different view but not going to happen in the next 10 days (trade deadline). How 2020 unfolds may factor in on the strategy for 2021.
Probably need to look at the bigger picture that has to include how the Padres want to distribute their payroll over the roster. Using Gore, Patino, and Morejon as starters in 2021 would allow them to not resign Richards and trade Davies (he will have a market) ... "save" $20MM+/- .... and maybe spend on an upgrade OF piece (or pieces) for LF and/or DH. Maybe save another $9MM by non-tender of Pham. George Springer?
A run at Realmuto if Hedges, Mejia, Torrens don't fit the future and Campusano can be viewed as splitting time with Realmuto catching and both can get time at DH (or maybe some 1B).
This winter should be the challenge of making a call on the pitching prospects' readiness ... the projected needs for the next maybe 5 years ... and how to size and deploy a payroll after the losses of 2020 and the specter of a 2022 strike/lockout and more cash drain.
I would be tempted for the longer run to minimize the 2021 payroll ... conserve some cash while giving the top prospects ML development time. To that end go with the young SP and in LF. Don't resign Richards, Profar, or Yates. Non-tender Pham and Hedges. Trade Davies for a non-roster prospect.

Quote from fenn68 on August 19, 2020, 7:25 amIn the post-game yesterday, Sweeney made the comment that some in the Padres organization think Quantrill's stuff and approach is at its best as a relief pitcher. With the other SP options that are viewed SP first ... may we be seeing the start of a permeant role for Quantrill as a late inning RP and not the "long guy"? Joint closer with Pomeranz since Pagan is not taking that role in 2020. In 2021, Yates not back ... Pagan a ? ... a series of prospect question marks ... no veterans (Stammen, Johnson, Hill, Strahm, Guerra, et al) are contenders?
Could be happening before our eyes.
