Padres vs. Rangers
Quote from Randy Manese on August 18, 2020, 8:55 amIn response to Mr. Padre, I completely agree that the Rangers have no legitimate gripe. I don't believe they had pulled any of their regulars (except PH for their 1b-man) before the 8th inning having conceded the game. The only team that did that this year was Arizona, when we were ahead by more than 5; we subsequently did the same. We've been burned by too many late inning comebacks and that's happened a lot in this weird year to many teams, so why the crying "foul"? I go along with what Davies said, pitcher should have made a better pitch, but Tatis still had to hit it out. Sorry that Tatis is so good! Understand that Tingler was trying to be nice and have Tatis take, but he's been a little soft at times when he should have made pitcher substitutions one batter earlier. Those kind of sentiments are fine when you have a dominant team like the Dodgers or Yankees but you can't anything for granted when you are scrapping for every out and every at bat. I'm all for Tatis swinging and helping cement the win even though the lead was a good one. Again, I don't recall Texas pulling their regulars after the 6th or 7th and if Perdomo had been any worse they would have scored multiple runs before we were forced into wasting another pitcher in what should have been a done deal.

Quote from Brian Connelly on August 18, 2020, 9:47 amThe thing I hate about "unwritten rules" is... what if it's a 6-run lead? 5-runs? 4 runs? There's no "clear" line where it becomes "OK" to swing there; the subjectivity of it is what's completely stupid.
Tatis didn't load the bases, then get into a 3-0 count. The Pitcher did. This is NOT like stealing 2nd when you're up 7 runs; he's reacting to the pitch, not deciding ahead of time to do it like a player would have to do to try to steal a base.
Baseball has WAY too much of this BS, and it's the only sport that does. It's game 1 of a 4 game series. If the tables were turned and we were down 7 & our RP was struggling, don't think their hitters would be standing there taking strikes. They'd be doing what they should; competing not just for this game, but to influence the rest of the series.

Quote from 3fingersplit on August 18, 2020, 10:03 amYup .....Sour Grapes by the Rangers.....don't pitch so bad to load the bases then throw a lollypop across the plate to one of the best players in the game......Tatis had to take that one the other way and he drilled it.
I don't remember the Dodgers taking it easy on the Padres the other night or the White Sox stop hitting after they hit 3 home runs in a row.....they kept hitting and stroked another one for 4 in a row.....nobody said a word
Make a better pitch but don't blame the hitter for doing what they are supposed to do......HIT

Quote from 84padres on August 18, 2020, 10:26 amI would be fine with dropping Perdomo, good stuff just can't put it together, Baez should come up when needed, I doubt he can do worse than 8.10 ERA. Hard to believe but Strahm and Pomeranz are the only relievers under 5.87. They can turn it around with a few good games seeing how most have 7 or 8 innings. I wonder if they have too many pitchers and they can't get in a groove without defined roles and trying to not use them in back to back games

Actually football has an unwritten Mercy rule as well.
You don't kick a FG up by 21 with 2 minutes left on the clock etc...
But that's quite different than this.
Plus, this season is like the playoffs from the very start...every win(and loss) matters so much you don't take anything for granted.
Unless the Rangers said they weren't going to try and score runs in the bottom of the 8th and 9th you keep piling it on.
Then there's the money factor.Back when these "unwritten" rules were more adhered too these players weren't making 10's of millions based on their stats.
Every hit and certainly every Home run and 7 RBI game means more money for this young man going forward.
No Manager of another team is going to dictate to a 21 year old what he does,or doesn't do,to make what money he can, when he can.

I think the short prep time of Summer camp & no crowds (might influence the bullpen more than anyone; sitting out there in an empty stadium... energy is NOT the same as the dugout) likely bigger factors, but I 100% agree that the increased # of players combined with the slightly more compacted schedule are DEFINITELY part of it...
That being said, 29 other teams are dealing with the same situation & about 27 of their bullpens are doing a better job than ours that was SUPPOSED to be good. Hopefully the law of averages just kicks in now & guys pitch up to what they've done in the past!

Quote from Brian Connelly on August 18, 2020, 10:55 amI'm sure Tatis will put weight on what his coaches & Hosmer told him... but he's also getting a lot of feedback about how dumb it is too. Guessing same situation again with < 2 outs he's swinging.

- Trent Grisham (L) CF
- Fernando Tatis Jr. (R) SS
- Manny Machado (R) 3B
- Eric Hosmer (L) 1B
- Ty France (R) DH
- Wil Myers (R) RF
- Jake Cronenworth (L) 2B
- Jurickson Profar (S) LF
- Luis Torrens (R) C
Morejon SP ...Torrens C should be familiar with each other from the alternate site. Opening test for Torrens to earn this ML role.
Good to see Myers back in RF.

Quote from fenn68 on August 18, 2020, 12:20 pmI guess "after further review" .... MLB has suspended Woodward for today's game and Gibaut (for 3 games but being appealed) ... the pitcher who threw behind Machado right after Tatis' HR.
I recall MLB took a hard stance about throwing at any hitter and on the consequences of bench clearing incidents during this season.
I guess they are serious and they wanted to send a message to not do anything retaliatory in the next few games. Frankly, Gibaut's pitch was a relatively soft thrown pitch behind Machado's butt ... one of those "we are not happy ... just to let you know" but did not seem to have any serious intent. Think the broadcast team over reacted.
