Padres vs. Rangers
Quote from fenn68 on August 18, 2020, 12:50 pmJust saw Machado's reaction while on deck when Tatis hit the HR ... just one of those roll the eyes sort of a why? Then Gibaut threw behind him ... he just smiled and nodded his head "yes". Hosmer / Kirby both went to Tatis do discuss the situation when he went to the bench.
Most of the "new age" players had no problem but get the sense that some might question the upside of that AB vs. the downside of retaliation (and "old school" says that is what should happen). Oddly, some discussion that this would be less of an issue if the count was anything but 3-0 ... really makes little sense either way.

I recall MLB took a hard stance about throwing at any hitter and on the consequences of bench clearing incidents during this season.
I guess they are serious and they wanted to send a message to not do anything retaliatory in the next few games. Frankly, Gibaut's pitch was a relatively soft thrown pitch behind Machado's butt ... one of those "we are not happy ... just to let you know" but did not seem to have any serious intent. Think the broadcast team over reacted.
HALLELUJAH!
Nice to see MLB FINALLY doing what's right. Obviously the pitcher threw at Machado.
The fact the umpires neither ejected nor warned him though, needs to be addressed.

Quote from WindsorUK on August 18, 2020, 1:26 pmI hope the Rangers aren't too hurt that Myers hit a grand slam.
Maybe Wil should send a cold beer to Woodward while he watches the game alone in his office.

Quote from fenn68 on August 18, 2020, 1:49 pmWhat I loved about Myers' slam it was in a clutch moment. Padres load the bases in the 1st with no out ... two quick outs without scoring ... it is up to Myers ... he works the counts ... the delivers.
Also enjoyed Cronenworth getting another hit off a LHP ... veteran at that.
WOW ... spectacular catch by Machado deep into the RF corner ... over the shoulder ... after tracking it down from his short RF shift position.
===========
Morejon apparently is going maybe 3 innings .... but so far a real good FB at 97-98 MPH ... good command ... effective. If you like "stuff" ... can see why the Padres like him.

Quote from fenn68 on August 18, 2020, 2:26 pmOK we like Tatis being aggressive ... but need to be smart. He was not in the 4th.
2 out ... on 2nd base ... Hosmer at bat ... runs are important and getting to 3rd does not much to improve the situation ... Padres only ahead 6-0.
Yes he was safe (at least that was how it was ruled) but success does not equate to it being a smart move.

Quote from WindsorUK on August 18, 2020, 2:31 pmRanger broadcasters saying it would have been bad look had Tatis walked home after being called safe at 3rd, as Ranger players left the field thinking he was called out( which he clearly was not).
My question is why????? Rangers dumb enough to leave the field when play is still live???

40 pitches?
There must be a reason why this healthy 21 year old, who had not allowed a hit, was taken out? Injury perhaps?

Bad look understates it.
I would blame Todd Frazier who swiped the tag and clearly looked at the umpire who was signing safe ... yet raised his finger and wiggled NO and proceeded to walk off the field ... that probably influencing the rest of the team. Actually if he was paying attention and saw the safe sign he had the time (had he not run off) to pivot and tag Tatis out as he over slid the base.
Actually do think he was out but "inconclusive" evidence I guess.
