Padres vs Pirates July 24-26

PreviousPage 2 of 4Next

These guys aren't losers individually, but holy shit are they losers together. The bucs are 5-24 against teams not named the padres and are about to go 4-0 against us. Fuck this team.

Just got home from the ballpark. I think this one was the nail in the coffin for me. My personal threshold for buying or selling was whether or not they could get over .500 by the deadline. They would have to win all 6 games that are left to get there at this point and I have zero faith in their ability to do so. I just hope AJ doesn't do something stupid that makes it worse.

OK, a one off tangent perspective as a fan who has followed baseball and invested emotion, time, money through the years supporting both good and bad teams.

It is easy to support the good teams … winning covers a lot. The challenge as a fan is supporting the bad teams with hope of the future. To that end, the bad teams (the players) have to be entertaining and appear motivated (I know that is not easy for some of them when playing poorly) … part of the job (and the source of getting paid) is entertaining the fans and keep the fans engaged.

With this version of the Padres, of the position players who we see game after game … only Kim consistently is watchable … Tatis is when he is “on” and Sanchez is OK. Soto is in his own world of Soto first. The rest look bored when things are going poorly (and often when things are going well). Maybe not what is inside but as a fan it is the projection of motivation that resonates.

Maybe it is a product of the specific players Preller has acquired … maybe it is a product of players on long term mega contracts … maybe it is a product of older veterans … whatever, the current edition of the losing Padres is a difficult watch even as a dedicated fan.

Same that applies to the fans applies to the players.

Winning makes everything better.

When the individual players and/or the team is under performing...like this one,its easy for the players to seem un interested or lackadaisical.

Manny,Grisham,Cronenworth etc would be all smiles, motivated and entertaining to the fans if they weren't under so much pressure to win because of the preseason expectations on this team.

Not excusing them....but it's human nature.

Hell I am not the same person to my friends and family right now.

This bothers me and it affects me sometimes.

Stupid I know...but in my case I spend all day anticipating the game that doesn't start till 10pm and when I stay up till after midnight AND we lose....the loss and the sleep depravation affects my mood the next day....even the lack of sleep isn't so bad after a win.

Just imagine what these guys feel after going 0 for 5 with 3 K's and an error and we lose.

I guess I am going to be the grumpy old man but not looking for them to be happy, smiling while losing … looking for them to be appear motivated to be better … not pout or appear not caring. It is these players whose poor performance created the losing … players who are getting paid premium money to perform … I need to see them suck it up and fight to get better … not moved to excuse them for their own shortcomings.

If you want a winner … need players who fight their way through the bad spells that always occur.

Since I am on the grumpy role … getting very annoyed with the “celebrations” on every hit and on the HR … even when losing badly or in an inconsequential moment. Even the players seem uninterested in the “forced” celebrations that someone has orchestrated as mandatory no matter the situation. (Note this is happening all over MLB for some reason).

Want the celebrations only when they recognize a critical positive event … and using them sparingly make them more impactful in energizing the fans (and probably more real for the players).

Little worse than seeing a player pretending to celebrate a meaningless event … seems so manipulative (and not sure why that is considered a good thing). Since these celebrations are now the norm in MLB … must be an edict for the League to all the teams by some misguided marketing folks.

I'm with you.

I wasn't so much as excusing them as just pointing out that winning and losing look completely different in the dugout and on their faces.

Especially on a team that knows they should be winning and aren't getting it done.

The A's are losing but they weren't expected to win....so it looks much different.

Yeah, this is just an uninspired, lethargic, pathetic group of players. I would say team, but I dont think they are really a team.

With all of our "swaggy" players, just doesnt seem there is any heart to this group.

I know that Seidler seems to like consistency, but something has to change, and I am thinking it is Preller that needs to change/go. For $275M plus in salary, there is nothing really right with this team.

Okay guys, I'm heading to Petco today( my kids bought tix for my birthday as we're in SD for the week)

I'll see if I can light a fire under their arses, stretch this winning streak to 2!

Go Pads!
