Padres vs Phillies NL Championship Series Oct 18-25
Quote from TarheelPadre on October 23, 2022, 3:22 pmVery good postseason for a team that underperformed in the regular season. Bottom line is the Padres made the NLCS with a chance to make it to the World Series.
However, it is disappointing that we couldn’t take advantage of home field in the NLCS. This off-season is where Preller needs to show some skill in fine tuning this roster. Offense needs lots of help and this series showed the importance of having a competent fourth starter for these best of seven series.

Quote from Jeremy Hill on October 23, 2022, 3:29 pmMelvin strikes again. Hader has been untouchable in the postseason and Harper is worse against lefties. As good as Suarez has been you have to make that move. Instead he tried to steal more outs. If you play with fire you're going to get burned. He didn't want to let Hader try to get 6 outs, so instead he gets 0. Oh well. Just a frustrating end to a good season. Go Phillies.

Or for next year? Or for when?, He did this the whole f.... year, stood waaay too long with starters, relievers, always trying to get one more out
Suarez has been LIGHTS OUT! I'm OK with decision to trust him ...
Sure, it was a good decision, it is just that there was a better one that could have being made, I told my son before Harper walked to the batting box, that Hader was coming in, form my couch with my big baseball ignorance I was pretty sure that was the way to go, surprised it didnt happen, and then when Harper was just fouling off those Fastballs like nothing, I kind of a just knew that big trouble was coming, anyway, lets see what they can do with Tatis in the lineup next year.

Quote from WindsorUK on October 23, 2022, 4:04 pmYeah, offensively we should be better with FTJ, a full season of Soto( let's hope he keeps the power stroke he found the last 8 AB's in Philly).
A 4th quality starter is a MUST. As much as Hader came around and dominated, with Melvin as our manager, not much need for a $15 million closer. Use that money on a guy that goes 6 or 7 every 5th day.
Fun end of a season. We should do this every year!

Quote from Henry Silvestre on October 24, 2022, 1:33 pmAnyone else caught the fact that the Phillies run out a very anti- analytical lineup..where the best hitter I'd not hitting 1st or 2nd or 3rd BUT rather the traditional 4th (Clean up) role..
With 2023 in mind..and especially vs lefties.would we be better off
Kim.SS
Soto RF
Machado 3B
Tatis CF
With FTJ Big time SLG does his bat make more sense in the traditional 4th hole?

Quote from BoosterSD on October 24, 2022, 1:38 pmI would argue that we should look at Soto leading off, they led off with Schwarber and that did well for them. The LAD lead off Betts.
Soto, Tatis, Crone, Machado would be just as good as Schwarber, Hoskins, Realmuto, Harper.

Probably would lean towards Tatis - Soto - Machado to a R-L-R and gets Tatis base running skills ahead of the other two. Side benefit may be that after a year off, Tatis may benefit from being pitched more to when the other two are behind him.
In my mind I would love for them to find a legit on-base guy for lead off and sit the three at 2-3-4 then sign Bell for #5 and trade for Murphy at #6 with Croney #7 and Kim #8 the Profar #9.
Not too much to ask, is it?

Well Soto is actually one of the best OBP guys around. Just a lot of power to boot.

But want his power / offense to be more productive with men on base … don’t really want to pay $20-25MM for an on-base guy leading off.
What should work at lead-off … given the new rules on pick-offs … is an on-base guy with base stealing skills. Just that type on base will likely result in better pitches to the following hitters. In absence of adding such a player … still would go with Tatis leading off (he has the base running skills) while setting up a R-L-R sequence with Tatis - Soto - Machado.

I looked at the MLB base stealing stats, and the leader in that category was Jon Berti from MIA. He is a mulit position guy, going into his first year of arb. He is a little older, 2023 he will be 33 years old, and his BA/OBP is a little low for a lead off guy, not sure how his numbers were effected by the shift. But with Tatis, Soto, Machado sitting behind him, and no shift rules, he could be our guy. Not sure what MIA would want for him, but at 33, entering his first year of arb., and MIA not usually a big spender, maybe a Rosario and/or Kerr level players. Berti does have about 75 games in the OF, and half were in CF, so you could see if MIA would go straight up Berti-Grisham. And then see who is better in CF, Berti or Tatis, and the other takes LF. He also has a lot of time on the dirt, so this could allow SD to Machado, Kim, Berti-2B, Crone-1B on the INF.
He is RHH, so if you wanted to keep the R-L-R thing going (which I like as well), you could go Berti, Soto, Machado, Bell, Tatis, Crone. Or, you could go with speed at the top, and go Berti, Tatis, Soto, Machado, Bell, Crone.
