Padres vs. Oakland

PreviousPage 2 of 7Next

Couldn't have worked out any better for the Padres!  Davies tosses another good game; back to back HRs; Campy gets a HR; AND our two worse pitchers throw a scoreless frame each.  Let's do it again tomorrow!

I still can’t get used to seeing hard hit liners right up the middle and then seeing a defender there for an out.

As I type this the A’s leadoff hitter hits one and we don’t have someone there.

I’ve seen it happen against us many times this season.

Im just tired of the shift thingy......

Im tired of "professional" hitters that cant hit it where the defenders arent.

They're facing way higher velo & spin rates, by guys going 100% for 1 IP specifically pitching to them so they're likely to hit into the shift.  Not SP's throwing 250 IP/yr throwing 85 with 23 complete games.

We've REALLY benefitted from putting Manny over there in RF on those extreme 2-1-1 shifts, but I've gotta agree with Mr. P; shifting has gone too far.  Should be a painted line extending 100 ft towards CF from 2B; two INF have to be on each side of the line.  If you want to go 3, have to be beyond that distance (Manny may sometimes be that far out).  Maybe just say 2 on each side, but need to mark it so not subjective.

I LOVE Tatis in the lead-off spot! And I also think Profar at 8 and Grisham at 9 is where they best belong. Either of those guys gets on base, makes Fernando more dangerous.

And it appears Machado batting behind Tatis is right where he belongs. He just seems really relaxed this year( read: no pressure).

Myers seems extremely comfortable at 6, as does Cronenworth at 7.

Hosmer, Moreland, Nola, Castro, and now Campusano( and Pham if he ever returns) anywhere in the 3,4,5 slots.

Brothers, there is NOT an easy part of that lineup, for ANY pitcher!

Go Pads!

I’m also not so sure I’m saying you shouldn’t be able to shift.....I just don’t like it.

Probably just cause I’m old and watching the ball off the bat you just expect certain hits to be hits.

I’m sure a guy like Tony Gwynn would have just “hit it where they ain’t”,but imagine if they just eliminated the 5.5 hole when he hit?

Anyone else notice the 3 games Nola caught? 0 -2 -0 runs allowed      .67 ERA,  Small sample size but pretty impressive .

I know that they are winning but it sure looks like they're having fun. After Campy's HR everyone was so happy for him.

3 of the top 8 in RBIs in all of baseball, I have never seen that before. Starting pitching is coming around and so is the pen. If we get Pagan back and pitching well then the 7th 8th and 9th should be set , just need 6 from starters all though 7 would be great

Who would've called that our best SP so far would be Davies ? Most of us were worried that he could be a decent 5th starter , 6-2  2.23 ERA with an .93 WHIP is beyond anything I hoped for. Preller really did a great job this offseason filling 2B CF and "5th" starter. And I still have hope for Pham next year.

Lauer only 3 games 2 starts but 12.54 ERA   Urias doing well .284 with .360 OBA.  Renfroe .154  , .228 OBA.  Margot .271   ,   .333 OBA  ( we would've been thrilled with that here)    Preller for Executive of the year.

I have been a pro-Davies guy since the trade ... for a change it appears I was right. He now sit #7 among MLB Qualified SP with a 2.23 ERA.

Always interesting to see how a players “image” or a pre-conception just overshadows his actual performance. Davis looks like a small HS kid without that big FB who just throws junk ... and even the reporters, analysts, announcers just don’t appreciate that. Even in the past week the guys covering the Padres kept focusing on Clevinger, Lamet, and Paddack as the top three for the playoffs (did not even mention Davies) and even yesterday Grant kept on about how many runs Davies gets as support and did not focus on his season long pitching success ... sort of implying he has been a bit lucky with the runs scored.

Not a small sample size performance if you look at this career AWAY from Miller Park ... he has be very good. Think a Keuchel type ... and that is pretty good since Keuchel won the Cy Young in 2015.

When Clevinger settles in ... 1-3 of Clevinger - Davies - Lamet should be very effective for the 3 game playoff series ... setting up either Lamet (if the series goes two) or Paddack/Richards to open the 5 game series vs. the LAD.

So the higher velo should make it easier to go the other way and beat the shift. It has very little to do with the pitching, and more to do with the lack of fundamentals and attitudes of today's batters. Too many batters have never been taught to go the other way. Use the pitch to their advantage. No, now its all about how far you can hit it! You cant make ESPN with a single through the 5.5 hole. But its "impressive" if you hit .225 with 27 HRs.

Im old too dude, and I dont like the shift either. I just think if you are at the top level of the game, you should be able to use more than like 8% of the playing field effectively.

As far as Gwynn, if the took away his 5.5 hole, then he would have screamed it done the open 3rd base line for a double, and not just Gwynn, many of the hitters of he 80s and 90s would have easily been able to beat the shift.

Its really sad that great players off the past might not even get a chance in todays game because of their size, body, or lack of power,

Greg Maddux - small body, below average FB, not a projectable body......every MLB team....pass.

Tony Gwynn - probably can not stick in CF, doesnt have the power for RF, below average ML power, probably destined to be a 4 OFer.

Well if you like yesterday's Padre line-up ... you can see it again today EXCEPT Nola DH / Campusano C.

I guess really throwing the new kid into the fire against the best team in the AL West!

Does sort of fit my thought of testing players in this last 20 games given the playoffs are pretty secure
