Padres vs Nationals August 18-21
Quote from Henry Silvestre on August 19, 2022, 9:12 amI am also to the point where Kowhley 1B/OF 55 BB ONLY 59Ks .... line drive hitter so not like EP has bumped his #'s up.. needs to be added to the 40 and brought up.. and given a couple starts at 1B (let Bell/Drury alternate a couple days off) see if the rookie can spark us up.. one thing is for sure he won't SO...
.324 .415 .492 .907 Really feel like Bell is pressing too much ..he has never been part of a winning team/stretch run and he has the pressure of being in a new team.. being in a postseason chasing team and being in a slump all at once... Bring up Kowhley ..get Bell a couple days to catch his breath ..and see how it goes...

I don't have a problem with Melvin sticking with him. I actually would have liked to see him give Yu the chance to get out of it. He was brilliant all night and the first single really wasn't hit all that hard. I don't have a problem with him going to Hader either though. Unfortunately he had control issues again, but I think the decision was fine.
This loss is on the offense. That was a pathetic showing. The Nats got 6+ innings out of guys with ERAs over 5. They only got 2 real hits. The Cronenworth single should've been an error. Manny, Soto and Kim are the only guys showing up consistently right now. If we're going to question Melvin's decisions I think you have to start with the decision to leadoff Grisham. He's been a little better lately, but still has by far the lowest average on the team and was terrible tonight. That was truly an embarrassing effort.
I believe Grish was OPS .978 for August and had a solid track record (small sample) vs Sanchez . So I won't? That... What I do ? Is Grish is one of if not the best bunter in baseball..bases are juiced... he didn't even attempt 1... big kid ..non athletic at the mound ..plenty of speed at 3B..
runner scores and 50% or greater depending on how good the bunt is Grisham is safe at 1st.. if so 2-1 Padres 1 out bases still juiced.. Soto can go looking for a ball to elevate..completely changes the situation as well with Manny on deck and only one out... Couldn't make sense of why NO BUNT there at all... I mean a big inning is nice and all but we had 2 freaking hits all game and 2 -1 is > 1-1...
As far as Yu.. I would have left him in..he was pissed when he got pulled... and Melvin should have used Hadder the day before in a blow out to end the game in Miami.... to get the rust out of him... overall just bad bad bad baseball...
The other thing ..He PH for Nola (who has been relatively consistent) with Profar who hasn't pinch hit much and has been slumping... With "Big Moment" Alfaro on the bench (he would have come in anyway to C if we had tied)... and I know Alfaro has been slumping/playing hurt.. But he is clutch and lives for walk offs... besides he is much harder to double up vs Profar as he absolutely sprints down the line... Just a bunch of little observations which lead to W or L a game....
Bob can't hit the baseball or can't pitch it... BUT he can
affect the game by his decisions.. and I give him an F ..for yesterday... My last head scratcher is Why is Myers playing for Profar?.. play him over Bell ... not Profar... that alone disrups the entire lineup..Grish in the 7th/8th hole is tremendous lineup depth.. Profar leading off (even when he makes outs) sets the tables by letting Soto/Manny and all see P sequencing and repertoire early and often... we have 40 some odd games to go..No time off .. Manny on a bum ankle plays daily.. so should everyone else...Period..if Bell needs to sit a game or 2 in favor of Myers fine... But Soto/Grish/Profar/Kim/Crone/Manny and Drury should not take a game off ..they can be subbed when we are up 10-1
They did want to rest Profar who has been playing almost every game and that apparently is wearing him down … his OPS in August is the lowest of the season by about .100 points.
Plus would not use Machado as an example … yes he played through that injury and actually hurt the club … look at this July stats … bad. (Of course there was really no legit replacement).

If they brought up anyone … probably Beaty (also a LHH) and bump Batten allowing Drury to back up 2B/3B. Beaty is about done with his rehab and has the ML/playoff experience in the ML.
Don’t know what to make of Kohlway … seems to be a good minor league hitter but gets no love as a prospect (ask the scouts about what they see has his limiter). Given what looks like an open winter roster for position players he should have a chance to be added then … but not sure.

Quote from MrPadre19 on August 19, 2022, 10:13 pmIt’s 1:12 am and I’ve done it again.
‘I’ve watched this team not be able to hit all night….Manny tie the game only for Josh F’n Hader to come in and manage to suck in different ways than he has the last 3 times he’s pitched.
What are we doing?
If this isn’t a typical Padre thing I don’t know what is.

Quote from MrPadre19 on August 19, 2022, 10:14 pmAt this point you can’t let him pitch with the game closer than 3 runs either way…..you just can’t.

Quote from Alex Tamayo on August 19, 2022, 10:20 pmThe funny thing is that the team that was criticized for letting him go at the deadline will be ahead of us in the wild card stadings in 5 days tops, go figure

Closers always suck in non closer situations it just seems.. and we haven't given him but one of those ..he sucked then too.. but Garcia should have pitched the 9th to be honest or Martinez 2 IP.. fk it . Awful offense ..awful Hader .. The rest of the BP rock it. Snell was a bit off but definetely not why we loss . 4 fkn hits and Hader is why. Another man at 3rd 1 out and back to back SO's . . We should have kept Voit and gotten Fediman *spell* from Nats instead if Bell and not traded for Hader in retrospect lol
