Padres vs Nationals August 18-21

If he can only pitch in low leverage systems that’s a horrible look.
Now think about the Playoffs…..ugh.
Even if he rights himself…..do we trust Hader to close out a Playoff game?
We do if he is April/May/early June Hader..
One thing I like in closing by committee (maybe not ideal for long season) but for a sprint to the finish and postseason.. it keeps the opposition guessing and not being able to prep for the one dude.. with Pomz coming up and Johnson too.. we could have anyone of 4 or 5 guys closing out games.. whereas LAD is predictable and (their closer has been anything but consistent) can be game planned for.

Quote from fenn68 on August 22, 2022, 11:20 amI am getting concerned that we may not get the Pomeranz and Johnson we had before their injuries. IF we get them back.
Pomeranz has been taking really slow in his recovery and rehab. Velocity is still not up ... not pitching in consecutive games. Johnson's slow recovery and the "rumored" rehab is even more problematic. It is August 22 ... and clearly more rehab required ... do the Padres really want to add them to the active roster in mid-Sept after not pitching for that extended period and not being totally sure they can take on a major workload in critical games down the stretch (or be effective at the ML level)?
In Sept the active roster expands by 2 but only one can be a pitcher (13 to 14). So, one could be added without a roster issue but can't add the second arm without optioning someone. Are we really confident that both Pomeranz and Johnson will be better than the current 13th arm? Not what they were ... not what they could be ... what are they in Sept.
I would not be surprised that either Johnson remains on the 60 day IL (never really makes his rehab 30 days) OR comes off and is released (he is a FA after the season).
In Sept ... Padres may be better off going with options that are currently in AAA for that 14th arm.

To me is who do replace? Now that Suarez /Morejon and Wilson are back up..Garcia.. Cristmat and Hill are pitching very well too.. Hader is really our only BP ??.. I guess I could see Wilson (rookie) and Cristmat being the 2 being replaced (post season roster) since the multi inning stuff doesn't play a role in post season with Clev and Menaea in essence becoming 1a and 1b piggyback options
With that said Pomz and Johnson need to Pitch> Wilson and Cristmat down the stretch. No need to weaken our BP just to get two arms back

Quote from MrPadre19 on August 22, 2022, 1:07 pm"IF" Pomeranz and Johnson are indeed ready and healthy for the Postseason and all the Starters are healthy Manaea is the one you leave off the postseason roster.
We won't need 5 starters and is Manaea out of the Pen an advantage over relievers who have been successful in that role in the past?
Manaea has not been lights out to say the least.
