Morejon looked great today. He has looked dominant both times I have seen him this year. Haven't even seen him use his knuckle-change yet. What does everyone think: future closer or still possible future starter? He is only 23.

Think the Padres still see him as a SP in the future … and that may be next season given the FA coming.

He has looked the part of a closer and that could be a fallback if starting does not workout.

Based on his history of low innings pitched Closer is my prediction...Baez/Lawson/Wethers/Khner will be battling for some SP innings.. I still think when the season starts next yr we will have 5 or 6 MLB tested SP..perhaps not 7 like this yr. But a good solid 5/6

It's Go time... SWEEP ...LFGOSD!

I would guess they go the Gore route with Morejon next year … start him with innings management with the eye on him being unleashed in 2024. As it is only Gore is back for 2024 … the other internal options are all long shots to be middle to top of the rotation pitchers while Morejon looks to have the stuff to be at least middle if not top of the rotation.

My concern is he hasn't pitched more than 60 innings in a season..and the last time (inj and such) he even got to 60 was like 5 yrs ago... He can be a dominant set up man or Closer now capable of multiple innings..

Pushing him to 100 IP in 23 and then 130+ in 2024.. I think is a mistake ... I'd rather see him be very valuable BP piece (maybe even a BP starter 3 IP) or Piggy back SP behind a Clevinger/Snell type.  a la Martinez (minus the early season Starts).. let Baez/Lawson/Knher/Wethers push each other for that 4th/5th SP spot... Just my opinion..He is 23 still (Amazing to think he has been with us 6 yrs already).. and i do love his progression at the MLB level..his #'s keep getting better and better... as he gets more and more comfortable season after season.. all be it in a little over 40 IP for his MLB career so far

While he may better fit the back end of the Pen due to his lack of innings the Team fit is as a Starter.

Payroll (after extending Musgrove and a trade or two) ,May dictate the necessity to use Morejon as a starter as soon as next season.
Our 2024 rotation will be very different than the one we have today.

Musgrove/Gore/Martinez/Morejon/Lawson?

Obviously there will be a FA/trade add before then but…..

And that is IF they sign Musgrove and Martinez does not opt out this year or next … if he is good enough to be a SP he is good enough to opt out for a bigger pay day given he is already in his early 30s.

Padres will have a BIG needed for SP in two years and after Gore … Morejon may have the highest SP ceiling of the usual internal suspects and signing four better SP for 2024 as FA just is not feasible (and very costly).

By the way Snell 10 starts 1st half  Padres 1-9...

Snell 1 start 2nd Half 1-0... already matched entire 1st half W's ...its all house $$ from here on out....

I think he won't be here in 8 days...

Padres get home late Wed night ..have Thursday off.. (only off day before deadline) I can see Musgrove Extension signed on Thursday... and a trade or 2 made... while still in the hunt for bigger fish headed towards the deadline...

Yeah if I am AJP/Padres...  I need to lock up Musgrove AND 1 of (Manea/Clev) at least for 23 24 25 26 (at least) and somehow buy out the options and keep Nick Martinez for the next 3/4 yrs...thats 3/5-6 locked...

Can go many directions in 2024  Castillo and Ohtani will be FA ..Padres even after these extensions should have over $100 mil ($70 if Soto is here) for 2024 as Yu and others drop off...and i am assuming Manny opts in...2023 offseason (especially prior to FA) will be very important towards keeping our SP (at least 3.. intact through 2025/26 (knowing that a 4th Yu likely gone after 23) when a lot of youngsters could be in SD vying for SP jobs...

The kid from Japan should come into play at some point and he is a game changer..as well...

I can see Ruiz in CF... and either Alfaro or Nola at DH.. after Voit experienced some upper thigh discomfort and Grishman's back tighten up on him yesterday after those back to back plays last night

And throw in the feeling that Abrams' soar bicep may keep him out of playing in the field.

If all three are out ... Ruiz is in CF and Batten is the bench? Although do expect all three may still be game time decisions. Abrams could DH even with the sore bicep I guess.

More concerned about the "day after" evaluation of the injuries ... although post-game Melvin did not express concern the real test is recovery time. Not great for a CF to have a bad back effecting his fielding and hitting or a "hitter" in Voit having his swing hampered. Having multiple players limited really constrains the bench ... maybe "forcing" a conservative IL stint for one or the other.

Not really seeing any AAA call-ups that excite me ... so maybe an early activation of Myers to DH (Batten down). Maybe Preller pushes a bit harder for a trade.
