Happy to see Musgrove get back into his groove and pitch a strong game … was getting worried based on his four previous starts.

——————————————

Although I knew about Soto’s talents via his stats and media reporting … I never actually saw very much of him playing in games. Now that I have seen him play … I am more impressed than just what the stats provide.

He is very “watchable” … a player that looks as though he loves playing and is happy, enthusiastic … that resonates with the fans and takes his value to the Padres to the next level. He and Tatis will make a dynamic pair.

Machado is different … the on field production is great and fans appreciate that … but he just does not exude that in game joy of playing … not his fault … just differences in personality.

Yeah Soto is like next level good at baseball.. no offense to any (Manny) other MLBr ..but he just plays as close to perfect baseball as a human can... doesn't swing at anything outside the strike zone ..doesn't try to hit pitchers "strikes"..waits for his "strikes" and has the fastest hands and reaction with the bat I have ever seen... he is incredibly gifted batter.... he is also [at least to my naked eye] a very solid defender in RF..with sneaky good speed

Agreed.

I wonder why everyone is so desperate to put him left, where we currently have a GG contender?

Soto has played nearly half of his games (250 v. 300) in RF.

Add that he has been exclusively RF in 2021-22.

My bias but I wouldn't take my elite player and shift him around the field. If they need (or want) to rest Profar ... they do have Drury / Mazara available.

I still say that the best line up for the balance of the year upon the return of Tatis, is Tatis-LF, Profar-CF, and Soto-RF.

I know, Profar is killing it in LF; however, I still think the easiest transition to OF for Tatis is LF. The spin and movement of the ball is the same as SS, and I fully believe that Profar can handle CF, especially with Tatis and Soto flanking him on both sides.

  1. Profar-CF, Soto-RF, 3. Tatis-LF, 4. Bell-1B, 5. Machado-3B, 6. Crone-2B, 7. Drury-DH, 8. Kim-SS, 9. Nolfaro-C.

Listened to Myers talking about going back to CF after all these years ... his view that CF was the easiest to adapt to. Basically easier to get the reads as the ball is hit. IF that is the prevailing view, putting Tatis in CF may be best for him to adapt and that leaves Profar in the more challenging LF.

Probably an unfounded worry but in LF/RF the odds of coming into contract with a wall (fair or foul) is greater ... with Tatis' aggressive style of play ... would playing a corner just increase the risk of injury due to his inexperience?

A lot of ways to go ... but probably a mix and match reality.

I played 3B/CF and SS... in HS... CF is by far the easiest of those 3 to play and reading the ball off a bat is the easiest.. the fade or hook off the bat to LF or RF is much more difficult to read...a lot of CF is range up/back left/right.. and Tatis has the speed to be 10+ feet better than Grish in all 4 directions...Having played SS his reaction /1st jump should be in line with his SS insticts..so not worried about him playing at least mlb avg CF .. and improving quickly playing it almost everyday...

Not a great start by Manaea, but better than the last couple. One bad inning, with an error mixed in. Hopefully he builds on that one.

At least the offense has come alive in this game. Hold them off for the series win.

Lets go get real healthy on WAS over the weekend.

He got squeezed on a strikeout that turned into a walk... should have been an OUT and not a BB in that inning.. but he looked much much better sans the melt down after the bad Strike call followed by the miss played ball by Soto
