Padres vs Dodgers September 2-4

PreviousPage 3 of 5Next

If there was any doubt left it’s now obvious Manaea can not be on the playoff roster if we have one.

The saving grace is that the Giants beat the Phils so still 0.5 games ahead for the #2 WC spot with Mil 3.5 games behind

Tomorrow is a game the boys have to get....C'mon Clevinger

If Manaea can get back on track, tonight would be a big time to certainly do it. Just playing himself off of the playoff roster, in my opinion, especially with the amount of bullpen arms. Needs to get out of his funk and hope it’s just a really bad stretch

Unfortunately it looks like Manea has already pitched himself out of qualifying offer territory. Damn. I wanted that extra first round draft pick.

Or it gives the padres the opportunity to bring back the same full starting rotation for next season. Manaea may be pitching himself into a much cheaper contract and might give the padres flexibility to bring both him and Clevinger back

Are you sure we want him back at any price? Time to move on with Morejon, Groome, Martinez (maybe), PTNL ….

You know where I stand here ..Groome MLB debut was where I would have gone... if we wanted No Groome...skip Sean and go with Clev ..move everyone one up (everyone had a day off on Thursday ..so everyone is on regular rest..

Padres have an issue in dealing with Manaea down the stretch. In a close playoff race … hard to continue to justify pitching Manaea every 5th game. With all the off days, can skip a few starts but at the same time have to be concerned about the workload on the rest of the staff going into the playoffs … the off days should have kept them a bit fresher.

Hard balance of not over working the top SP and making sure they win now to actually make the playoffs. I could see … if the the bullpen is not taxed … a bullpen day to cover a Manaea start along with the off days. A good chance a Martinez / Crismatt / Morejon game could fit in the mix. No idea what to do with Manaea … not comfortable with him out of the pen in a close game.

Calling up Groome (probably the only SP in the minors worth considering) would cause a roster problem given that room will be needed for Johnson soon and, maybe, Stammen who is already pitched twice in a rehab.

Past 30 days … Manaea 6 starts and the others 5 starts:

ERA / WHIP

3.07 / 1.09 … Musgrove

3.12 / 1.31 … Snell

3.15 / 0.90 … Darvish

4.68 / 1.36 … Clevinger

9.21 / 1.69 … Manaea

The Musgrove - Snell - Darvish trio looks strong for a Wild Card series and Clevinger (based on a decent WHIP) could be effective (probably out of the pen). Manaea likely not activated for the playoffs … will not need a 5th SP and better RP options.

Just have to get to the playoffs.

Just my own opinion but Campusano better hit because his mechanics as a Catcher are terrible on so many levels....he is NOT the answer behind the plate

Continuing on my disappointment (concern) about the impact of Soto / Bell on the playoff race.

Yes they both have great hype from their histories but the Padres traded a bundle to get them over the offensive hump and get to the playoffs by adding IMPACT hitters. Past 7 days have not gotten better .. actually worse for them. Their sole skill is taking a walk … that is not IMPACT.

Add the following for their work with the Padres with runners in scoring position:

Soto (21 PA) … .235BA/.235SLG …. No extra base hits … 1 RBI … not what expected for the “best hitter in MLB … maybe all time”.

Bell (41 PA) … .219BA/.313SLG … 1 HR … 8 RBI

Basically half way through their run with the Padres for 2022 … and not much better than who they replaced … bought IMPACT bats … got players who walk/hit singles.

Time is running out for them to flip the switch.

To be fair Soto is in a 5-6 game slump .. and has been consistent before that..Not 🔥  Hot!..remember Manny's 1st 2 months in SD after signing ..it wasn't until an absolutely Hot streak in mid June that yr that he got super hot 🔥 and comfortable I'm his new enviroment..I see Soto getting hot just when we need him ..heading into playoffs... Bell had a completely cold start to his Padres career.. he has been much better lately and he too hasn't got his HOT padres streak yet.. not too worried about those 2.. the offense has been terrific this road trip (despite their performance) except for last night.. I expect more out of those two and know will get more from them...

Now it's time to get in the Car ..press the Pedal to the Metal and take this Series Win Today.. Lets Go Padres!

Looks like the Dodgers changed their pitching plans. Caleb Ferguson is going as the opener with Ryan Pepiot expected to follow as the bulk guy.

Acee pointed out that we could go with a 4 man rotation and stay on regular rest until the 17th in his newsletter this morning. Really we have enough off days left that we could probably get through the rest of the season with a 4 man rotation with maybe a Crismatt led bullpen day or 2 mixed in. I wouldn't be surprised if Manaea comes up with a phantom injury when Johnson or any of the other bullpen guys are ready.

For the life of me I don't know why Bo Mel didn't go Clev last night (off Thursday so regular rest) amd Musgrove today...then Manaea @ Petco where he has a respectable 4.10 ERA .. whereas on the road is almost 6.00 ERA (worst amongst SP in MLB)...??? On top of that as an A's and a Padre he has been horrific at Dodger Stadium so ???

Anyway nobody in the San Diego Media asks these questions so whatever.. Cant look at yesterday..Only day that matters is today.. Pedal to the Metal and a Series Win in LA = 7-2 roadie.... Lets play with house $$ (Go AZ and Go SF) as both teams chasing will be done or close to done playing by 1st pitch.. and seperate...separate.... Lets Go Padres!
