Padres vs Dodgers September 2-4

Yes they both have great hype from their histories but the Padres traded a bundle to get them over the offensive hump and get to the playoffs by adding IMPACT hitters. Past 7 days have not gotten better .. actually worse for them. Their sole skill is taking a walk … that is not IMPACT.

Time is running out for them to flip the switch.
To be fair Soto is in a 5-6 game slump .. and has been consistent before that..Not
Hot!..remember Manny's 1st 2 months in SD after signing ..it wasn't until an absolutely Hot streak in mid June that yr that he got super hot
Now it's time to get in the Car ..press the Pedal to the Metal and take this Series Win Today.. Lets Go Padres!
I look at his entire run with the Padres and focus on the IMPACT stats were he only has 3 HR and 6 RBI in over 110 PA … has not produced with RISP. His “stat lines” look good with all those walks and non-clutch hits. Even consider all PA his SLG is .133 lower than his career and .083 lower than in WASH.
As though the Padres bought a $300K Ferrari and got delivered a Toyota Camry and are being told be happy with the better mileage. Not what they wanted I suspect.
He should turn around at some point given his history … but he was dealt for to have IMPACT in the 2022 playoff run … and he is not doing that. The clock is ticking.
Similar should be said about Bell who at least has more RBI on one hand but less SLG/BA.
For there reputations expect Soto and Bell to … by themselves … to take over some games and contribute the big hits leading to wins. Right now the Padres still seem to be winning with decent pitching and Machado … nothing has changed (improved).

Based on some quotes attributed to Manaea he basically he will do whatever it takes to help the club ... and right now his pitching is not it. So, being skipped as a SP will not be one of those events that upsets the player (and he becomes a negative in the clubhouse) ... hopefully. Maybe even an IL for an injury TBD would be acceptable.
Did look to make sure the Padres did not trade all that much to get him .. they did not ... Adrian Martinez (25) who was on the Padres prospect list but has not done well either in AAA or ML this year and Angeles (20) (who really looked like an interesting prospect for the Padres in A ball) seems to have stalled out a but in High A ... "nice" stat line but not looking like a projectable ML starter. So basically the cost was his nearly $10MM contract and Padres did get a low A arm that had his moments in LE.
Don't see him back with the Padres ... even at a lower salary ... given the need for added payroll going over the CBT to fill other holes before the #5 SP with some quality (and that will take money). It will be difficult enough for the money to re-sign Clevinger (if wanted) and some hitters with both Drury, Myers, and Bell FA. Then add the desire for an upgrade at Catcher.

At a minimum, seems like Manaea has to skip next start vs Dodgers ... maybe do the bullpen game vs Ariz to push Darvish to Game 1 vs Dodgers on Friday ...

Also don't see how Sean makes the post season roster to be honest..SP will be Yu/Snell/Musgrove... Clev would be emergency SP /long relief... Martinez/Morejon/Wilson and Cristmat are all Multiple inning types..Johnson/Garcia/Hader/Suarez/Hill
Don't see how Sean or Stanmen make post season 13 P unless there are injury factors

Adrian Martinez pitched 6 shutout innings against the hot Baltimore Orioles today BTW.
Would love to see that kind of outing from Manaea at some point in September.

Well that sucked but the good thing is that even though the Pads lost tonight so did the Brewers and Phillies so they still have a slight cushion for a WC spot.
This home stand with the D'Backs and Dodgers is going to be a make or break week

Wow......Clevinger looking A LOT like Luis Perdomo- really good 1 or 2 times through the lineup, then BAM! Definitely not someone to count on in a short series.
And Kim at SS.....NO WAY on earth that guy sees the 6 when Jr returns. Just a total different level of athleticism and play making ability( Kim has 2B written all over him)
Total different level of ability between LA and SD at the moment. This group needs something to galvanise them- a brawl, Melvin getting fired up and kicked out of a game for taking someone's back, something....ANYTHING! They look like a bunch playing out the season, whilst still in the hunt for a post season berth!
Just really down on the team now. They are playing bad baseball at the wrong time.

Amazingly we lost 2 of 3 and gained on Phi.
Unfortunately we lost a golden opportunity to add some space ahead of Mil.
Our schedule doesn’t get any easier while theirs does.
Have we ever won or even looked like a good team on National TV?
It’s bad enough that ESPN can’t stop talking about how great the dodgers are but it’s much worse when we give them nothing positive to say about us.
