Padres vs. Dodgers

PreviousPage 8 of 13Next

Glad Perdomo was removed after the first inning, but I really had to hold my breath when they brought in Stammen vice Johnson or Pagan and then kept him in after Tingler visited the mound.  Thought for sure the game was over but we were more lucky than good throughout the game and I'll take it!  A home run by Hedges - who would have thought!  A good night when both the Dodgers and Rockies loose!  Go Padres!

Strahm ( a SP last year) rolled.   Curious everyone's opinion that saw game about Quantrill.  Awesome he bore down & got out of the bases loaded no outs jam... but he got to bases loaded before getting an out.   The slow starts for him were an issue last year.  Thoughts?

Pitcher down tomorrow to bring up a reinforcement?

I do think it's ludicrous for Preller to supposedly be looking for a #5 SP when we have:  Joey, Cal, Gore, Patino, Morejon, Baez, Eickhoff, and even Matt Strahm as #5 options... literally 5 current or top 100 MLB prospects plus 3 more candidates and NONE of them are up to it?

This is why I don't bet on games.

Glad to see the Bullpen coming around...we couldn't survive a full season of what they gave us the first 10 games.

Strahm and Quantril were the heroes last night.

Surprised no one has commented on Pomeranz coming in to close instead of Yates. Yates had not pitched since Friday so "rested".

In the post game presser Tingler said Yates was still a bit "sore" and giving him the extra day off seemed advisable. Said Yates would return as a closer ... and this is just me ... did not seem committed to Yates being the one and only closer going forward. I guess the Pomeranz option may cut into Yates role.

It should be interesting how the Padres approach Yates in FA ... higher priced, 32ish, Pomeranz / Pagan / Guerra / Johnson returning along with the potential return of Munoz ... might not make him a critical re-sign.

This game was the perfect example of this year's funky format working in our favor; allowing us to "steal" 1 of 60 away from LAD.

Simply couldn't do a bullpen game like this mid normal season with a game the next day.  The expanded roster / tightened schedule falls into the Pads "wheelhouse" strength of the deep pen.

I won't agonize over the blown game anymore, b/c now I feel we've "stolen" a couple...

All I know is these close 9:40 games are killing me!

I hardly got any sleep last night and we have how many more of these right in a row?

Four more I believe....

Yikes

Maybe tonight we can have a 6 run lead in the 7th so I don't have to watch till last pitch?

Yeah right!

Bullpen makeover not just for 2020, since all 5 guys acquired are multiple year control.   4 of those 5 plus Guerra can't be optioned.  Obviously most guys aren't Yates; but Pomeranz sure looks like a closer, Pagan has closed too, and Munoz, Guerra, and maybe Jose Castillo all have closer potential.

I believe FA market will utterly implode this year, which while hurting our 3 FA could benefit Pads.  Of the 3, the guy we would MOST like to have back is obviously Richards.  If he can't find a multi-year deal he likes, which could easily happen, why not re-up with Pads for 1 year at at similar salary + incentives to this year.

Profar is likley facing a massive salary hit or even a Minors deal.  When Pomeranz signed, I thought the Pads left a narrow window open for Yates to extend & slightly exceed in salary what Pom got.  That window has completely closed IMO.  At the moment it's hard to see a team giving Yates his 7 MM+ salary over a full season.  Only way Yates comes back is if it's a 1 year deal totally on Pads terms in a cratered FA market which would be awkward if Pom > Yates $.  I'd love to see him back, but don't see it.

I'm not reading anymore into last night's use of Pomeranz than what Tingler said.  If you recall, when Yates blew that first save badly, he said he would have no hesitation going back to him in a save situation and he did that against the Dodgers.  So I would say, if healthy, Yates remains the primary closer but now there are good alternatives that didn't exist last year so Yates doesn't have to pitch back to back to back.

Long term, who knows?  Like to keep Yates but we have even more options next year with Castillo (picked up in the Myers trade, remember) and Munoz coming back some time next year.  Also, have Baez, Bednar, Wingenter and others who could fill a bullpen spot especially if the roster is back down to 26.  Probably get the most value out of Yates by trading him to a contender this year who has money, that has lost its closer and can afford to give up a high level prospect or a solid OF or C who is a consistent hitter.   Baseball is a business.

I agree that it's doubtful we keep Yates beyond this season unless on a "very" team friendly deal.As was said we just have too many other options to Close.

This year it's real nice having a few options. If we head into the 9th with a small lead we can use Pom or Yates depending on the hitters coming up.

Both if necessary.

If both are available why go straight to Yates if the first two hitters are left handed or struggle against LH pitching?
