Padres vs Braves Series Thread
Quote from 3fingersplit on July 14, 2019, 8:44 pmWell not exactly the way I was hoping the Pads would start the 2nd half of the season
I am disappointed with so many facets of the Padres right now....the lineup is a mess
Meyers can be fixed ( very stiff stance and a tippy toe hitter rolling out on his front heel....his vision is all screwed up going up instead of down) but he won't see the field anytime soon
I get the feeling that the pitching staff doesn't have much faith in Mejia behind the plate as he stabs pitches instead of a nice funnel into the strike zone....Hedges gets strikes called that Mejia doesn't. Hedges has a few things that can be fixed at the plate that would make all the difference in the world for him and if he was hitting .220 instead of .180 the Padres would be that much better.....Mejia is still not ready from a defensive standpoint and at the plate still has a lot to learn
Greg Garcia seems to have put Kinsler on the bench for the most part but have you ever seen anybody get caught looking more than Garcia on fastballs on the inner half....if he ever learned how to get his hands through and pull a pitch he would have 8-10 knocks. You should never get beat with 2 strikes on a fastball in.....that's just dead red and good hitters make pitchers pay.
Oh Well.......On to Miami and here is hoping the bats come alive on the road
Go Pads !!!!!

Have no belief they can be "fixed" offensively at this point in their careers ... and little reason to get them marginally better.
Hedges (who will be 28 next month) has a career 1137 PA that only generated a slash line of 206/256/365 (w/RC+ of 63). That very low OBP is made worse by the inability to take a walk. The concern on Hedges' hitting was there when they drafted him in 2011 ... all through the minors ... and continues in the majors. He has not responded to "coaching" over all those years ... maybe just can't recognize pitches .... maybe lacks the bat speed ... maybe just in love his fly ball swing and refuses to go opposite field but he has gone from a poor career offense to just flat ugly in 2019 ... 185/245/310 (wRC+ 46). Basically his offensive upside is still bad and unacceptable on any team that needs offensive support and his plus defense is not enough to make up for that. Move on and work on upside plays in Mejia - Allen - Torrens - Campusano over the next few years.
Kinsler is just past his prime ... if they can move him for that PTNL do it and go with Urias / Garcia (who at 29 is more a part time player but is delivering a 261/346/400 line in 2019).
Myers' 2019 is the one I can't understand. Not that he was anything more than an "average" player (career wRC+ 107 in 2950 PA) with a long ML track record ... but his 2019 at 214/313/397 (wRC+ 90) and a 36% K-rate ... at age 28 that is a dramatic drop. Not seeing much difference in his swing (always has been a free swinging and loopy) but he seems "confused" with pitch recognition ... a lot of takes on good pitches and swinging and missing on others. Mental not physical? Need glasses?
Of the three (and maybe because moving him is nearly impossible without eating his contract) ... I expect (hope) that maybe will rebound to his past levels ... enough to maybe get a more of a return (or at least some possibility) when the move him.
