Yep, he abused of the double switches for no reason, wich resulted in not having somebody to come out of the bench in the 10th, the 10th!!, is not like it was a 14th inning game and you have to let the pitcher hit because obviously you have no one else, and the way he set the bullpen up for this game was just awful

Quote from WindsorUK on July 14, 2019, 5:07 amDon't know how it played out but it sure seems AG got caught with his hands in his pants.
This all stems from the BS notion that starting pitchers can only throw 100 pitches and innings 7,8,9 require " specialists", which dictates your major league roster consist of 2 position players and 1000 pitchers!

Quote from WindsorUK on July 14, 2019, 6:43 amApparently our system is STACKED with talented pitchers, from starters to relievers. Hopefully going forward, we can create a roster of GOOD pitchers that can be successful in multiple roles.
If a starter gets pounded, we need to be able to plug in a guy who can pitch 5/6 innings to pick up the slack. Guys like Strahm, Perdomo, Quantril could possibly fill that role.
2 guys that we can go to to get 3-6 outs at the end of the game( like Yates and?) to round out the staff.
Staff of 12, 8 regulars, 5 position players in reserve.
Didn't someone ( an ex player?) suggest a limited number of pitchers in order to speed up games? Worth trying, for multiple reasons.

Quote from fenn68 on July 14, 2019, 10:43 amNext season expect the new 26 man roster to be 13 pitchers (capped at the level) and 13 position players adding to some flexibility.
Since I am an old guy who yearns for the days of complete games ... the current state of pitching frustrate me. However, the game has changed driven a lot by the stats guys.
Do think the analysis that SP (as a normal rule) become ineffective the 3rd time to the roster making bring in a RP a "smart move" which in turn suggests the lesser need for 3 effective pitches and knowing how to pitch to go deep into games ... with that tied to much larger pitchers who throw much harder ... the instruction is just throw all out (usually that results in inefficient pitch counts) and SP out in the 5th/6th. RP go the same way, big guys just throwing all out for 1 inning yields better results than trying to get them through 2 innings.
Given the recent trend ... we may be lucky that the new rosters limit the pitching staff to just 13 plus going back to the 15 day IL should reduce the "strategic" use of the IL to rest an arm and requiring more prudent use of the 13 men by not over working them. (However, the future of marginal RP who are out of minor league options may be in question ... having RP with options to get rest will be more valuable).
For the Padres the keys are getting those top of the rotation arms who are more likely to go the 6-7 innings (or more) combined with an offense that gets so healthy leads early so the SP can be left in longer.

Then we went to the Bullpen.

Quote from MrPadre19 on July 14, 2019, 4:02 pmWhy did Hoffman hold Hosmer at 3b on that hit?
He was rounding 3rd when the outfielder fielded the ball.
Even Hos could have made it with ease.
Every run matters when you’re still down by 3 with only one inning left.

I agree, I'm not too fond of any of them but Yates

Quote from dusty on July 14, 2019, 6:15 pmRegarding bullpen woes and Munoz, why aren’t they trying him with his minors numbers and that arm in higher leverage situations? They brought him up for a reason. I don’t think it was for mop up/garbage innings.
