Padres Trade Talk

PreviousPage 9 of 10Next

Wow....we've really stacked the bullpen! An obvious need. And Perez can provide a few game covering on the front end?

And the AAA OF from the Yankees- is he an immediate upgrade over Johnson?

That said, AJ is all in on this year and next! Let's hope we make some noise because if we don't, there'll be A LOT of barren years in Padre land.

Short of blowing past the cap and resigning Cease and King in 2 years, we'll have a rotation of Waldron, Brito, Vasquez, and aging vets Darvish and Musgrove. The lineup will be full of geriatrics in Machado, Bogaerts, Profar, Cronenworth. Hopefully Salas and DeVries can join Tatis and Merrill to form a young nucleus.

Problem with trading all your top picks is you have ZERO controllable, affordable contracts to intersperse with all the mega deals that we're handed out.

I guess we've got to trust AJ. Considering he's had 1 good team in his 10+ years here, I'm not sure that's good business.

But hey, prove me wrong. I want to see a WS championship as much as anyone.

Go Pads!

The new guys are Adam, Scott and Hoeing.

The current active BP are Davis, Gallaspie, Jacob, Kolek, Morejon, Estrada, Matsui and  Suarez.

Two will have to go. Morejon, Estrada, Matsui and Suarez are going no where. That leaves Davis, Gallaspie, Jacob or Kolek. They should send down Kolek and Davis

Actually 3 will have to go. There are currently 9 in the BP. Adam replaced De Los Santos. My guess is that when Scott, Hoeing and Martín Pérez are activated Davis, Gallaspie and Jacob will go.

Saw some write-ups on the CF received from the NYY. Two major skills … elite “80” speed and plus defense in CF. No projection as a hitter and not much power. Basically a specialist 4th/5th OF ceiling.

That does make him a decent insurance piece behind Merrill. Johnson has not impressed (probably DFA over the winter) and looks as though they are moving on from Azocar. No one in the system to back-up in CF.

Lockridge is Rule 5 eligible this winter … so likely to be added to the 40 man. Although, since at 27 and a speed/defense specialist, the Padres may choose to gamble (if needed) and leave him exposed given a low chance any team would take him and keep him on their 26 man all of 2025.

Having said that, I think he will be the 4th/5th OF for the Padres in 2025 as they move on from Johnson and Azocar … and Peralta departing as a FA.

IF they re-sign Profar and go with Merrill, Tatis to complete the starters … every day starters … the reserve OF logically will be little used and that fits “specialists” like Lockridge. Indeed, the #4 could become Ornelas (LHH) as first in if needed leaving Lockridge as #5.

Concerning the Padres numbers in the bullpen, you can't just send down Davis and Kolek.  Davis has no options remaining which means he is either going to be DFA'd or released.  Kolek, as a Rule 5, cannot be sent down to the minors by the Padres - he could be put on waivers and claimed by another team and, if not, he has to be offered back to the Mariners.  If the Mariners are not interested in taking him back (and I think he's done enough to peak their interest), then he could remain with the Padres.  Gillaspie and Jacob both have options, so they could be sent down.

As Fenn has mentioned earlier, Kolek has pitched a lot of innings and it is possible he is at a point of arm fatigue (?), so could they slip him through on the IL for the rest of the year - and the answer is yes because he has spent enough time on the team major league roster to preserve his status as a Padre for next year.  I agree that Davis is the other likely man out.  Another option may be to send Hoeing down to stretch him out as a starter and keep Jacob and Gillaspie; Hoeing does not have to actually pitch in El Paso, but just get built up a little while the Padres see what Jacob and Gillaspie can do (and both have done well so far).

So my bullpen has:  Suarez, Scott, Adam, Estrada, Morejon, Matsui, Gillaspie and Jacob in the short run, although it would not surprise me if Hoeing replaced either Gillaspie or Jacob.    We still have Cosgrove (LHP) trying to find his 2023 groove and Reynolds did much better than I thought he would when he was up; also, Brito could be another option if they want to put him back in the bullpen.  A lot more bullpen depth with 53 games to go.  Now, just need the starters to continue to do their part and remain/get healthy.  We're sure to get more out of Martin Perez this year than we did with Rich Hill last year and praying for a positive resolution in Darvish's personal issue and Musgrove's arm healing to allow him to pitch effectively.

It appears that Perez is moving into that last starting slot next Friday vs COLO … so we should start getting read on him before Musgrove is activated.

Would not be surprised when Musgrove is activated he becomes an “opener” until fully stretched out and one of Perez or Vasquez becomes the second in.

Since Davis will likely be released … Musgrove’s return from the 60 day IL will not cause a 40 man issue BUT could be an issue on the 26 man if they keep all the adds and move all the bubble incumbents less Kolek who clearly would be the bubble guy at that point.

Good chance we see some IL stints arriving … maybe 3 sequential IL “rests” to get from mid-August to the end of the season vs one long IL stint on one arm. More complicated if fDarvish returns or Peralta returns. In a playoff run want the best 13 available … that my change as time goes by.

Scott, Hoeing and Perez activated.

Gallaspie optioned to El Paso, Kolek place on 15-day IL and Davis designated for assignment.

Honestly wouldn’t surprise me if they try to move peralta through waivers. A team in the hunt with a need in the pen just might claim him given his success last year despite his struggles this year. Might be an opportunity to dump his salary

If you give Peralta a mulligan for this year because of injury, his previous 3 years with the Yankees were very good.  Peralta has a player option for the next 3 years at about 4.5M; that amount is not prohibitive in a RP market these days so if you put him on waivers, there certainly could be a claim.

The other part of this is do the Padres need a healthy Peralta for the playoffs?  From the left side, Morejon has greatly exceeded expectations and innings pitched this year.  Matsui has been looking a lot better lately but will he fade down the stretch?  We now have Tanner Scott and he will dominate but it certainly wouldn't hurt to have another experienced LH pitcher - you have to remember before he started experiencing his adductor strain in early June, he might have been the best guy out of the bullpen not named Suarez.  I say get him healthy and see what he can do to even further solidify the pen - don't think you're going to see Cosgrove come all the way back this year as a depth piece.

Unfortunately he will most likely use his option...I'd prefer he not and we use that $ to put towards Tanner Scott to extend/sign him instead.

Tanner Scott might be wanting to come close to Hader money.
