I have a bad feeling that LHP Martin Perez, 5.20 ERA, is going to be another Rich Hill. Preller should have gone to the minors rather than Perez.  Some better options are 25 year old LHP Jay Groom has a 3.60 ERA in 5 IP this season in El Paso or Jared Kollar, 3.19 ERA, 82 K in 87.1 IP. Kollar was just promoted to El Paso.

Groome is suspended for the season.

Groome was banned from baseball for a year for betting on games. Mazur had a 1.95 ERA in AA before he got called up and clearly wasn't ready. I wouldn't be surprised if we saw a few bullpen games while we wait to get Musgrove back. Hoeing has experience starting and relieving. Nabil Crismatt and Carl Edwards Jr have been starting games in the minors. Maybe we see them open a game or 2 and lean on what should now be a strong and deep bullpen.

The new guys are Adam, Scott and Hoeing.

The current active BP are Davis, Gallaspie, Jacob, Kolek, Morejon, Estrada, Matsui and  Suarez.

Two will have to go. Morejon, Estrada, Matsui and Suarez are going no where. That leaves Davis, Gallaspie, Jacob or Kolek. They should send down Kolek and Davis.

That's right. I forgot about Groom being banned.

Musgrove pitching in Peoria today.

Think Perez is a good gamble for a #5. Beyond being an all-star in 2022 with a sub-3 ERA (just 2 years ago) … his 2024 stated with 6 outstanding starts (ERA in the mid-2s) followed by 6 in May-Jun really ugly starts (ERA over 7) … but groin injury had him on the IL on May 27th. July is sort of in-between … good - bad - bad - good.

Basically he still has elements of being very effective … change of scenery may just work to have him as the best #5 option on the team. Even if he just goes out and is good 50% of the time … still and improvement for the club.

Can’t send down Kolek as a Rule 5 … have to put him on waivers and if not taken offered back to SEA. (Not suggesting that does not happen).

With how crazy the market got and how little starting pitching was seemingly available you have to give Preller credit for the aggressive early deals he pulled off. Cease may have cost as much as or more than what he cost at the start of the year if he had waited until the deadline to get him. We got 22 extra starts out of him. We got 68 extra games out of Arraez and may have done better than the Guardians did to get a player of similar value in Lane Thomas.

From MLBTR:

Exclusive: The #Pirates are paying half of Martin Pérez's remaining prorated salary, a figure of roughly $1.3 million, because they legit coveted this 18-year-old lefty they picked up from the Padres. Scouts are giddy.

Definitely feels like Preller values prospects less than the other 29 GMs.

Sounds as though the NYY had a tentative deal to get Flaherty but back out based on their medical review … then the LAD stepped in.

Maybe that is why he went so cheaply … and why Preller was not in the final run.
