Padres Trade Talk

How did the dodgers get Flaherty for their #8 and #22?

I'm having a hard time with that one, myself. Liranzo is 21ish and having a down year after a stellar season in 2023. Sweeney has 1st round pedigree but has already been traded once in a roster clearing move from the Yankees. This return feels supremely underwhelming in this market, and certainly raises the question as to how the Padres couldn't beat it AND let the Dodgers get him. I guess Preller really wanted to kit out the bullpen over everything else.

Does anyone think that maybe Preller is known around the league as someone who will overpay? And that maybe teams hold out for comparatively more from him than they do other teams?

Just a thought.

Martin Perez from the Pirates is the new SP acquiared.  We all hope this works out better than Rich Hill, lol!  Niebala has to work his magic with Perez.  Go Pads!

Probably a better “lightning in a bottle” shot than most. LHP and not doing well in PITT this year (5.20 ERA as a starter) … but that is better than Mazur was.

”Rental” type and in 2022 with TEX he was an All-Star with 32 starts and a 2.89 ERA. So not far removed from being very effective. Actually he as had some very good starts offset by some very bad starts … so if he is #5 SP and goes 50/50 Padres are probably ahead of their alternatives.

Meanwhile Cole Irvin was just DFA'd by the Orioles (for former Padres prospect Blake Hunt). Not much better, but have to think he would have cost a lower reward prospect than a DSL kid with a 1.5 era.

With Perez being added to the 26 man … De Los Santos being deleted from the 26 man … net no change EXCEPT though De Los Santos was one of the options to make room for Adam, Scott, and Hoeing.

27 yrs old OF Brandon Lockridge is the return for De Los Santos. Speed and solid contact... Maybe an attempt at upgrading from Bryce Johnson.

dodgers got:

Flaherty

Kopech

Kiermaier

Amed Rosario

Tommy Edman

and only gave up one top 15 prospect.

I have a bad feeling that LHP Martin Perez, 5.20 ERA, is going to be another Rich Hill. Preller should have gone to the minors rather than Perez.  Some better options are 25 year old LHP Jay Groom has a 3.60 ERA in 5 IP this season in El Paso or Jared Kollar, 3.19 ERA, 82 K in 87.1 IP. Kollar was just promoted to El Paso.

Hopefully just a few starts in place of Mazur until Musgrove is back

Let's hope he pitched good enough to win in those few starts.
