Padres Trade Talk

PreviousPage 6 of 10Next

With Adam, Scott, and Hoeing being added to the active roster ... who is being optioned, released, or traded?

Three will have "action" out of Davis, Gillaspie, Kolek, Jacob, De Los Santos ... some today / some tomorrow I would guess.

TRADE DETAILS
Padres get: LHP Tanner Scott, RHP Bryan Hoeing
Marlins get: LHP Robby Snelling, RHP Adam Mazur, INF/OF Graham Pauley, INF Jay Beshears

I don't mind trading Mazur. But Snelling. This is too high of cost. But the Padres did get some good players. Especially, since Scott will be a free agent after the season  unless they give him an extension before the season is over. I don't know when  Hoeing becomes free agent.

Tanner Scott, 30, has a 6-5 record, 45.2 IP, 1.18 ERA. and 53 K
Bryant Hoeing, 27, has a 1-2 record, 30 IP, 2.71 ERA and 25.

As Fenn68 said, Who gets optioned, released or traded? Wandy Peralta can be released or traded to make room in the 40 man. Kolek, Brito and/or Davis can be traded.

Do the Padres get a SP? Crochet, Flaherty, or other. Who will they give up? The Padres can also use Bryce Johnson in a trade. There are OFers in the minors that are better than Johnson that can be brought up until Tatis returns, such as Azocar.

Stay tuned....

A strategic thought ... in the playoffs really only need 3-4 SP and typically teams don't let the SP get into deep trouble and move to the pen as soon as needed. Cease - King - Waldron - Musgrove should handle the SP roles then a high quality deep pen can step in. Padres had the 19th rated pen (not optimal for the playoffs) ... now one of the best.

Also, Padres have a lot of arms going over their historical innings in a season (King, Estrada, Morejon, Waldron ...). Maybe the deeper pen may allow them to "save" some innings out of those arms so they are fresher for the stretch run.

No issue on the 40 man since Mazur and Pauley were on the 40 man ... so two on / two off.

Padres already released Otto to make room for Adam.

When Musgrove come off the 60 day ... good chance Peralta goes on ... keeping the roster at 40,

When Tatis return from the 15 day (no 40 man move needed) but Johnson is likely released actually opening a slot for a late non-roster add.

Looks as though the Padres have engineered moves that will keep them under the 2024 CBT and reset the penalties.

To that end not much internal support coming in 2025 so a good chance the Padres will be willing to go over the 2025 CBT to return this team and push to re-sign Profar, Kim, Higashioka, and Scott while paying the price of ARB for Arraez, Cease, and King.

Basically all in for 2025 then ... ??????????? for 2026.

Martin Perez from the Pirates is the new SP acquiared.  We all hope this works out better than Rich Hill, lol!  Niebala has to work his magic with Perez.  Go Pads!

How did the dodgers get Flaherty for their #8 and #22?
