Padres @ Tigers July 21-23
Quote from fenn68 on July 22, 2023, 1:23 pmThe Padres announced several roster moves this afternoon ahead of tonight’s game against the Tigers. The club placed right-hander Alek Jacob on the 15-day injured list (retroactive to July 21) with right elbow inflammation. To replace Jacob on the active roster, the club selected the contract of left-hander Jackson Wolf. Right-hander Domingo Tapia was designated for assignment to make room for Wolf on the club’s 40-man roster.
Did not see the Jacob move coming.

Quote from fenn68 on July 22, 2023, 1:43 pmWith the DFA of Tapia following the DFA of Castillo plus the TJ for Knehr (which will land him on the 60 day IL next year) ... Padres have done early clean-up of a potential log jam next spring.
All thee are out of minor league options for 2024 (along with Honeywell, Avila and Groome I believe) so DFA, at some point were inevitable. At least now, they added pieces (hopefully as good or better) that will allow in 2024 the up and down game to keep the pen fresh.

Quote from 84padres on July 22, 2023, 5:16 pmWow, Wolf couldn't have had different innings. 4 pitches 1st inning. 37 in the 2nd. 10 in 3rd, 11 in 4th.

Quote from WindsorUK on July 22, 2023, 7:07 pmShame Campusano was hurt so long. How many games would we have won with Luis's bat as opposed to Nola's in the lineup?
And all this talk about his defense....Sanchez comes in off the street( with his reputation for bad D) and steers Snell to being MLB's best pitcher over the last 2 months.
Enough already! Campusano is our number 1 catcher until Salas arrives.

Quote from Notmyopic on July 22, 2023, 7:24 pmOdd to have a catcher get four hits for the Padres. It’s his time, now he can finally claim the job or fail like every other Padres catcher.

Quote from WindsorUK on July 22, 2023, 7:42 pmI just find it hard to imagine that this front office was so desperate NOT to give him a chance.

Quote from Jeremy Hill on July 22, 2023, 10:23 pmI don't think you can put it on the front office. It was pretty clear some guys were frustrated with him and just did not want to throw to him last year. It looks like he put some serious work in to get better behind the plate and I'm sure pitchcom has helped too. If not for the freak injury he would have gotten the chance to take over a lot sooner. Hopefully this is the start of him realizing his potential.

Quote from fenn68 on July 23, 2023, 3:29 amWell Campusano is only 24 and if not for the injury would probably have been sharing the catcher slot all season with Nola … Padres would have not signed Sanchez.
However, in 2021 (age 22) and 2022 (age 23) he was not going to displace Nola (or any veteran back-up) unless he had a great offensive display in limited AB. Padres valued a catcher with a plus ability to work with the pitchers (Nola has that and was at least hitting at a passible level) and, in their minds, were contenders after the 2020 playoff run. An unproven rookie with flaws just was not going to bump veterans. Most reports say the front office was “split” on his future.
Although confident (hopeful) Campusano’s past as a hitter translates into the ML … only a couple of games since his return, so a little cautious. However, the benchmark from Nola / Sanchez is low offensively so even a poor Campusano will be better than either of those two. Throw in he is low cost / long control and he appears to be on track to displace in 2024 either Nola (aging and maybe lost his bat totally) or Sanchez (FA to be so has to be re-signed and don’t know the contract demands).
P.S. Campusano really looks like a catcher with a body that is short, compact, and muscular … the kind that could stand the beating behind the plate over a season … or play fullback in the NFL.

Quote from fenn68 on July 23, 2023, 9:04 amWolf optioned to San Antonio ... Avila recalled from El Paso.
With next Thursday an off day ... Padres will not need the 5th starter until Aug 1 and by then a lot of roster changes could be at hand. In the interim Avila probably becomes the long man or innings eater in a blowout (either way) to preserve the rest of the pen.
