Is this my reward for being a loyal Padre fan for 50 years?

Wow ,what a time to be a Padres fan.  46 years for me. 1975 Randy Jones is what did it for me .

Fernando Tatis Jr. is now #2 on the highest surplus trade value in MLB....behind only Ronald Acuña Jr.

$24.28M per year average. Where is SD finding this money! Wow!! Does this actually put SD over the CBT?

Probably not a huge number for the first couple years....so no.

Since the CBT is based on the AAV (Not cash flow) think the Padres are now about $204MM for CBT purposes ... then still have to add Kela. CBT first cut is $210MM.

Beginnnig to think crossing the CBT threshold will not hold Siedler back if that is needed to win and good chance the CBT for 2022 after the CBA is revised will be much higher (if there at all).

I am assuming for cash purposes the bonus will be paid now but a low 2021 salary ... still a bit of a cash hit now.

Except for Pham ... everyone else returns for 2022 and built in increases probably get offset by Pham’s departure. So, will be interesting on how they replace Pham ... but getting way ahead of myself.

But if you think about it we don’t have any other position to worry about.

It’s all covered.

I’m thinking the left fielder for 2022 is on the roster now(Profar/Kim/Cronenworth) then the job goes to Abrams/Grisham in 23’.

I'll take this as a birthday present!

It's likely the signing bonus is spread out over at least 2 years.  Guessing a little now upfront, more after season ends (won't take long to make it up in merch sales), then some at the end of next season.  His base this year will be low like 1 MM ? so little cash out until 2021 season is over.

There could be 2 or even 3 opt outs; THE big issue is when the first one is... hopefully longer than 6 years, and with that signing bonus, I'm guessing it's at least 7 years out.  Wouldn't have such a large S.B. on a guy 4 yrs from arb if he could leave too soon.

As insane as this sounds, it's like the Pads have "pre-signed" Tatis to exactly Machado's 10/300 deal 4 years from now (when he would be 26, same as MM when he signed); which is effectively 6 years after Machado signed his.  This is because FT would have made at least 4/40 anyway in arb (say: 1/8/13/18)...  that sounds like relative value to me.

The devil's in the details, but this is incredible & glad it happened now so not hanging over ST... SD the place to be in MLB for many years to come!

Moved to San Diego in 1970 and have been a Padre fan ever since.

It is really interesting that all this happened after Seidler took over. I wonder if we would have spent this money with Ron Fowler at the helm? Does Seidler get to call the shots even if Fowler disagrees? Is Fowler on board with this? The O'Malley's are minority owners I believe. Does anyone know the decision making hierarchy of the ownership group?

In 14 years, Tatis will make $293M more than Mr Padre Tony Gwynn made in his entire tenure with SD!

We thought AJ Preller was a rock star......it’s Peter Seidler who’s the rock star!

If you go back and look I said Peter Seidler was going to be different and has the money to make damn near anything happen....since seeing the Pads start in '69 and now running out of time I may not get to see a World Series title but I for sure will dancing on the clouds screaming.....Go Pads !!!

Some details on the Tatis deal from Jon Heyman twitter feed. Basically the deal is broken into two categories, $34M for the next 4 years, $1M this year, $5M in year two, $7M in year three, and $11M for year four. And the $10M signing bonus. The top amount for any year is $36M, does not say what or how many years at that range.

No trade clause and no opt-outs!!

Fowler sold a portion of his ownership stake to Seidler; enough to make him the majority owner.  Fowler is now a minority owner.

Seidler calls the shots now is my understanding.   Fowler no cheapskate like prior owners, but think Seidler is even more "all in" on the 30,000 foot view of a city with now only 1 major sports team having the youth movement "face of MLB" there forever on a team that is in the National AND International spotlight and has the perfect role as "upstart" to the evil empire LAD.

PADRES - DODGERS is a WAY more compelling & relevant rivalry than "Yankees - Red Sox"; certainly this year, and likely at least the next 3 years, if not the entire decade.  Padres have really knocked the Giants off that perch they held for a decade or so.

I am so giddy I can't stop pinching myself
