Padres sign Tatis to a 14 year contract!
Quote from MrPadre19 on February 17, 2021, 5:55 pmThe Padres now have two of the seven largest contracts in Major League Baseball!
What is going on?
Is this my reward for being a loyal Padre fan for 50 years?

Quote from fenn68 on February 17, 2021, 6:06 pm$340MM / 14 years .... now that is commitment! Also, no trade clause but saw nothing about opt outs.
Unlike a lot of these super long term deals ... Tatis will only be 35ish when it is over ... so probably no “dead years” at the end as with Pujols, Cabrera.
Will be interesting on how they set the cash flow (he does get a $10MM signing bonus). Probably would like to lag the bigger money until after Myers / Darvish / Hosmer depart in a couple of years.

Don’t think so ... but close.
If they cash flowed this “lower” in the next 4 years (his arb period) than jumped it up for the last 10 might be easier to handle the money. Lags big money to post Myers, Darvish, Hosmer. Sort of what they did with Myers ... common approach.

Probably not a huge number for the first couple years....so no.

Since the CBT is based on the AAV (Not cash flow) think the Padres are now about $204MM for CBT purposes ... then still have to add Kela. CBT first cut is $210MM.
Beginnnig to think crossing the CBT threshold will not hold Siedler back if that is needed to win and good chance the CBT for 2022 after the CBA is revised will be much higher (if there at all).
I am assuming for cash purposes the bonus will be paid now but a low 2021 salary ... still a bit of a cash hit now.
Except for Pham ... everyone else returns for 2022 and built in increases probably get offset by Pham’s departure. So, will be interesting on how they replace Pham ... but getting way ahead of myself.
