Padres @ Rockies June 9-11

PreviousPage 3 of 3

Snell ... a notorious 2nd half dominate pitcher ... is again following that pattern. Including the first 5 innings today and his last 3 starts ... 22 innings and only 2 runs. A very good sign for the Padres.

On the other hand looking ahead ... Snell is a FA after the season and is making a case for the Padres to re-sign him to a pretty decent contract. Only 30 and looking at the extensions for Musgrove (similar age) and Darvish (mid-30s) ... will be pushing the 4-5 year / $20MM AAV level (he is making $16.6MM in 2023).

I guess he is liked by Siedler ... the Padres will need SP for 2024 with little of impact ready in the minors and a "light" FA market that would cost a lot anyway ... up to Snell but would think extension talks should happen this summer before he hits FA.

Padres are likely to exercise the club option on Wacha (if he continues to pitch close to his current level) ... $16MM AAV / 2 years ... Wacha is 32 so sort of an internal comp.

Locking down Snell and Wacha with Musgrove and Darvish would be a good base for 2024 ... allowing them to be more flexible in the commitment for the 5th/6th SP. Lugo likely will opt out of a $7.5MM player option if he is any good as a SP. Martinez will be interesting ... club option at $16MM AAV / 2 years fits a good SP but he is now a RP but not a closer so good chance the Padres decline leaving it up to Martinez to take the player option at $8MM which is fine for a RP but what does Martinez seek? He will be 33.

Weathers? Morejon? Honeywell? ... no locks there ... and with the uncertainty surrounding Martinez and Lugo and the FA market ... pursuing an extension with Snell looks strategically appropriate.

Nice pitching change, Bob.

Snell was sat at 85 pitches. Had at least 1 more inning in him.

Newsflash Bob- your starters are your BEST pitchers! Leave them in as long as you can! No reason these grown ass men can't throw 100+ pitches.

And good to see Soto back in his two hole groove.....or should I say rut?

Outside of those 8 hits over 2 days, he's well under .100 from that spot.

Thank heavens for that pass ball......

Dammit…I knew when Garcia came in the game we were screwed…most of his pitches are flat and sure enough.

Wasted a great game by Snell

Dammit

Best thing that could happen is for the game to be suspended and finished in August

Very gut wrenching loss.. Snell had to leave the game ankle swelled.. BP usage in game 1 and 2.. limited today to Cosgrove/Garcia and Honeywell.. Nick could close but had had big usage before and got HOT before the rain delayed..so the prudent thing to do was go with Honey..

I blame this Loss on the lack of Hustle by Garcia .. on that grounder..

While all the reasons you stated are valid, the main point for losing this game once again is the offense. While we did win Saturday with 3 runs, you can not reasonably expect to win in COL with 3 runs. Lamet is no longer who he used to be in SD, and the offense needed to do better. Margin for error is just too small in COL, and you must score more runs in COL than 3!

This loss is on the sporadic offense. Again!

You are on the key point ... at Coors Field and facing some poor pitching and still cannot push runs across the plate.

Not scoring runs just makes any fault (and faults happen all the time) in the pitching, fielding, base running seems worse as they become game critical. Have those faults in a game with some runs under you belt ... annoying but not as magnified.

I still can't get over Soto's day. A 412 foot out in his first AB. Then with the bases loaded he's just out in front on a ball that would have been a grand slam if it had been fair and ends up hitting into an inning ending double play on a 105mph line drive up the middle. Add that to Snell being taken out by a liner off his ankle when he was absolutely dominating and it feels like it just wasn't our day. Definitely another frustrating loss.
