It's going to be good to see Fernando out there in a real game again. With Musgrove coming back as well it's time to get rolling.

Just getting on the road to Phoenix to see the return of "El Nino".

Go Pads!!!

My office is 10 minutes from the Bob. Enjoy your trip.

With a RHSP on the mound tonight, I would love to see this line up.

  1. Tatis, 2. Grisham, 3. Machado, 4. Soto, 5. Bogaerts, 6. Carpenter, 7. Crone, 8. Kim, 9. Sullivan

Bumgarner DFA'd by D-Backs just now.

I wonder how much is because of his poor production (85%) and how much because they're tired of his MadBum antics like yesterday(15%)?

I have been pretty vocal about not wanting Tatis leading off.

He has the most power on the team and we have other high OBP guys.

I'd rather have Grish lead off then everyone else move down a spot or even put Soto at #3 to have a L/R/L/R

Against lefties do:

Bogey

Soto

Tatis

Machado

But,I guess they're gonna lead him off so....

I can understand the idea of not leading off with Tatis because of the power, but we have a lot of power on this team, and we are just waiting for it to show up.

However, no one else on the team has the speed that Tatis has as well, so I can appreciate the havoc he can create on the bases as well, should he not homer.

So we will see how it works out.

Not sure why Melvin or anyone would want Grisham at the top of the line-up. His OBP is below average (.284 last season and 313 this year) and he does not steal bases (7 last year, 0 this year). Offensively he offers some HR power so probably better suited for the bottom of the line-up. Putting near the top just generates an out making it harder for the big 4 four to produce runs.

Should note that other than the big 4, Padres don't have anyone to insert at the top of the line-up that truly fits that role. I stick with bundling the big 4 in slots 1-4 (whatever order) to put max pressure on the pitcher with no "easy out" to break it up.

As for Tatis leading off ... I can see the logic of having his dynamic speed in this new era of restrictions on the pitcher throw overs and increase base stealing reeking havoc on the pitcher's psyche plus be it by stolen base or a first to home run on a double could (should) generate a lot of runs. His power will still be there ... would be a good idea if the 9th hitter had some on-base skills so they are not all solo shots.

Note: Bogaerts has the history of being a good high leverage hitter ... so would not want to "waste" that talent leading off.

Here is my theory for batting Grisham 2nd. One, he only strikes out a little more than above league average, and walks a little more than league average so he puts the ball in play. Two, although its a small sample size, some of his best batting numbers come while batting in the two spot, a .256 BA, .346 OBP, and a .496 SLG. Three, with Tatis on base about 37% of the time, especially if Tatis is on 1B, there would a nice hole for Grisham to hit through. Four, Grisham is great a laying down a bunt, either sacrifice or bunt single. And five, while you are correct, he doesnt steal a lot, he does have speed, reducing the chance for a double play, and has the ability to score from 1B on a double from Machado, Soto, or Bogaerts. And I could see some double steals with both him and Tatis on base. Plus this season, Grisham so far is hitting the fastball fairly well, and dont you think with Tatis on base, and Machado hitting behind him, would Grisham not see a lot of fastballs.

So while Grisham is not the perfect two hole hitter, at this time I do think he is one of the better options.
