Padres at (???) Seattle
Quote from fenn68 on September 18, 2020, 8:08 pmNot sure what was going on with the M's pitching staff but hard to watch them let Kikuchi stay out there with absolutely no control ... for 89 pitches in 4 innings.
I thank them.

Quote from Randy Manese on September 18, 2020, 10:31 pmThought Paddack did fine, although Mark Sweeney commented that his velocity was not there. Maybe he's taking his cue from Davies with better control over velocity. Good to have Pham back - you can see that he'll have impact against LH pitchers. You can tell the impact a catcher has on pitchers by watching Torrens compared to Nola. True, Kikuchi was all over the place but many of his pitchers were borderline that could have been easily called strikes if Torrens didn't reach out and snatch them from where he set up by rather smoothly moved his glove over like Nola did. I can see why Nola is the #1 even if his bat is dragging a little bit. I'd still like to see the other catchers get some work, however, to keep Nola's legs fresh. Go Padres! Let's clinch that playoff spot tomorrow.

All that really matters is winning the game and that he breaks out of it by the playoffs.....but I “really” wanted him to get the MVP and now he’s got no chance.
His struggles have even put him behind a couple of his own team mates.
Careful what you wish for! I'm only partly kidding... I'd rather see him slump now than suddenly in playoffs. Obviously would like to see him snap out of it before then. Slumps are part of the game, he had to go through one eventually.
BUT if he didn't and hit .340 etc won MVP at 21... how do you think that long term contract extension would look? It's conceivable this slump could save Pads some $ when extending Tatis. Not my $, so I don't care what he gets... but it might increase the odds of seeing eye to eye "enough" in negotiations that a deal gets done at all! That's the main thing!

What a difference a year makes!
Drove me so nuts. It was like 90% of Franmil Reyes' HR...

Quote from Brian Connelly on September 19, 2020, 1:36 amIf Hosmer will also be eased in at DH (vs RHP) initially as Tingler essentially came out & said, it makes no sense to activate him Saturday vs a LHP, since Pham will probably DH again. Maybe Sat we'll get Mejia C (& Nola 1B?)
Even though 2 pen arms will have to go down for Hosmer & then Strahm, I still wouldn't be surprised to see another move/s. With Paddack going 6 after an off day, Sunshine & Lamet next 2, another off day, then 2 vs LAA and ANOTHER off day, we simply don't need all the length that's in the pen. Really think it's an opportunity to get guys looks that haven't played much or at all this year. Do have to think about the SF doubleheader, but the SP's likely to cover most of those IP in 7 inning games.
We're going to clinch a playoff spot. Definitely need to lock down SF not being able to catch us, and the #4 seed for Home series. Not being cavalier, saying don't need Lucchesi AND Morejon AND Perdomo AND G. Richards for 4 games in 6 days. Could be a surprise. Tim Hill got used today.... ??

Quote from Randy Manese on September 19, 2020, 12:58 pmSheffield coming off two straight wins where he's pitched well (vs Tex and Ariz) but also got an average of 6 runs of support behind him. His only bad loss was against the Angels, where he gave up 6 runs. My guess is that we will win because (a) Clevinger and the bullpen are not going to give up 6 runs and (b) our offense game is better than either Texas or Arizona. Nonetheless, Seattle is a lot like San Francisco in their resilience so we have to not take them for granted and keep the pressure on throughout the game. Go Padres! Clinch that player spot!

Quote from fenn68 on September 19, 2020, 3:49 pmKevin AceeJayce Tingler says Mike Clevinger has biceps tightness, is at 85-90 percent. Scratched from start tonight out of caution. Hope/expectation is he starts in a few days. The good news: Eric Hosmer is back, will be in lineup.==============Patino back up to start tonight ... don't know the players sent out yet.
