Padres at Giants

PreviousPage 7 of 8Next

I'll take 4-2 to start the season, even though we could have been 5-1 or even 6-0.  In this game all the pitchers struggled for the Padres with Pierce Johnson actually having the best overall performance.   Colorado is not an easy place to pitch and we need Richards to be very efficient on Friday after a tough travel day/afternoon game. I'm thinking Hill, Guerra and Yates if we get the lead going into the 8th/9th.  Hope our offense is up to it.

Go Padres!

Well.....that’ll teach me.

I went to bed after Profar homerun when we extended the lead to 6-1 figuring there’s no way it happens 2 nights in a row!

At least this one still ended with a win.

For the record I’ve never been a Perdomo or Stammen fan.

But I never would have figured Pagan would struggle like this!

Do you think Tampa would be interested in swap backs?

As bad as Pagan has been, I'm sure Manny couldn't look any worse on the mound..........

What in the world has happened to our vaunted bullpen? I agree with you guys - those knuckleheads pitch just average baseball, we're undefeated.

And for all you who say it's only a few games, in a 60 game season, one or two games may mean watching the playoffs from home or actually participating. Not only are we playing for EVERY win but need to be focused on EVERY run.

Time to bring in Darren Balsley to fix the relievers ? Keep Rothschild for the starters ?

Too early to OVERLY be concerned by the RP ... Padres sit 20th in MLB in RP ERA.

Since most of the pen have a track record of success .... giving them more than 2-3 appearances is warranted. Should be encouraged with the Padres record even with the bullpen problems .. when Yates, Pagan hit their stride ... all will be good.

Concur with Fenn but you have to give the Giants credit for their tenacity.  They are still the only team to beat the Dodgers twice, on their home field, and getting superior performances from Yaz, Solano, Heinemann and Dickerson.  Probably they will return to the norm sooner than later because their pitching is not that good, but like what the coaches have done with that team to get them competitive.

Tingler/Rothschild is still leaving our RP in one or two batters too long.  I think they wanted to get Perdomo out earlier but Pomeranz wasn't ready.  They should have taken Pagan out a batter earlier, especially against that left hand hitter, but they apparently didn't want to bring in Hill.  These things should all work themselves out in the near future as well as our more established RPs moving towards their historical norms.  Like what I've seen of Guerra and Hill and even Johnson and Bednar.  The others have one good inning and one bad - Perdomo is especially good when first coming in and then overthinks and gets himself in trouble.  I think we'll see Strahm and even Pomeranz get better as the season goes along, but hope we don't overuse the latter.  Stammen has to be pushed to the back of the bullpen unless his velocity is at least 90 - if he can't crank it up anymore to his former 92-93 range, his value decreases significantly.  I don't know if we truly have a long man out of the pen.  I'd be looking at Baez and/or Morejon to fill that role because we won't be carrying 16 pitchers through the season; hope they are showing something at the alternate work site.

Is this bullpen thing happening accross MLB, maybe because they didn't have a normal "spring training", anyone has an idea?

Really good question.  A lot of teams have given up more runs than we have, but probably more (than us) from their SP.  And the 3 batter rule has to help all offenses.

But intuitively bullpen P's should be able to "get ready" more quickly than SP's & be a lot less affected by the long layoff.  Plus their arms are fresh.  But control/reps/pattern not there.

I'm personally convinced having 30-man roster with 11-12 RP really doesn't help.  I really believe the way Tingler is looking at it is wrong, and wonder if it gets in guys heads too much, or the useage pattern change is disruptive.  It makes utterly no sense to say Pom or Yates can't pitch 2 days in a row when they only have to complete a 60 game season, and they often go back to back in a 162 game season?!?!

You mean 5-2!  "Could have" easily been 7-0.  SHOULD have been 6-1.  We'll see if it matters end of season...

Doubt the issue with any RP is going 2 games in a row .... just which 2 games and for how long.

Has to be some strategic thinking about using up arms for games 1 and 2 and having zip for game 3. Or saving arms in game 2 (and losing) to have arms for games 3 and 4.

Then throw in the this opponent’s line-up, the lead, next day’s line-up .... plus a modicum of confidence in all the staff (who all will have to be used at some point at maybe even more critical situations) ... with as many games in a row through August, can burn out the “better” RP options if not careful ... even in just over 30 days.

60 game schedule is short but need to be winning now AND in Sept.

Having said that, still think they went to long with Stammen when his control was clearly missing.

Why aren't they using Quantrill?

He has 1 appearance for 1.1 ip.

I would prefer using him in the 5th or 6th and let him go two or three innings in some cases.

Please tell me they aren't only going to use him to follow Lucchesi.
