PADRES AT COLO

Morejon in ... risky move.
I agree. Richards was dealing. Give the bullpen a breather.
However, I can see the other side as well. Let Richards leave with a zero ERA in Coors. There are some guys that have been added to the bully that might need some work. And we have an off day tomorrow.
Think they really wanted to get Morejon some work there. Will be interesting to see if he stays up. He should.

Quote from MrPadre19 on August 31, 2020, 9:25 pmGotta feel good about your team when your lead off hitter goes 0-4 with 4 strikeouts and you still win by 6!

Thats what make the Dodgers so dangerous and now the Padres. We stop Turner and Seager and that troll Muncy burns us. Stop Betts but Bellinger kicks our butt. We now can do the same. You could have Grisham, Tatis, and Machado go 0-12, and still score 5+ runs because Myers, Cronenworth, and Profar could go off. Stop Myers and Cro, well Hosmer, Nola, and Moreland could still put up runs.

Quote from Randy Manese on August 31, 2020, 10:14 pmAll pitchers impressive but what really was notable was the way Nola handled the staff. Went out to the mound several times in key situations and seemed to calm down Richards, Morejon and Pierce Johnson. As much as Hedges was a good defensive catcher, I don't recall him ever, maybe rarely, doing this. Maybe that trade with Seattle wasn't that much of an overpay after all, especially if we get something out of Adams.

YES! It was really noticeable. Maybe some was b/c he was new, but just love how comfortable he seemed right off the bat working with a new staff. Seeing him do it made me wonder the same thing... why didn't Hedges do it more?
Here's a freaky stat: Austin Nola is 2.5 years OLDER than Austin Hedges... Hedges drafted out of High School, Nola was a Senior College sign. I have LONG thought the myth that guys have to hit the Majors by the time they're 22.734 years old or whatever is WAYYY overblown, and LOVE how Cronenworth has been proving my theory correct this year. Now he's joined by Nola. Nola has about 1/4 of the MLB AB Hedges does... but he's been playing baseball for an additional 2.5 years.
Maybe he starts to regress quickly... who cares. Minimum salary.

Quote from hoffy51 on September 1, 2020, 3:50 amVery important win IMHO. We are now 4 games up on Colorado instead of 2 if we would have lost.
3.5 games up in the top wild card race
Nola got his first hit as a Padre.
Rosenthal made his first appearance as a Padre and had a clean inning, striking out two.
Morejon got his first major league win.
PS: And we came within a Stammen or sweeping Colorado at home.

Quote from MrPadre19 on September 1, 2020, 6:17 amI'm hoping this trade for Rosenthal ends with him signing a 2 year deal with us to stay on.
Rosenthal/Pomeranz/Pagan is a damn good 8-9th group.
I just don't see Yates back with the Club now.

Hopefully Rosenthal is not shooting for the “career” contract this winter ... and there will be a number of teams seeing a closer. Tend to agree that Yates’ returning is not likely ... unless can’t sign Rosenthal and Yates come in on a low cost / 1 year deal.
Right now there is a bit of an active roster jam for the pen .... next year maybe even worse if some of the “younger” candidates are deemed ready to get regular ML time ... thinking can’t keep delaying the development of major prospects such as Patino, Morejon, Baez, Gore (who likely will be first to replace Richards) plus Adams and Castillo enter the mix .. then Williams? That is a lot to add into the mix.
Might see Preller getting active during the winter focusing on “selling” excess RP for Rookie Ball prospects again to set up another waive of prospects for 3-4 years down the road.

Rosenthal will obviously be shooting for a "career" contract this offseason. He's made a triumphant recovery/return to form moving past his disastrous 2019. He's "only" 30. Think multi year @ 8 figures/yr even in what figures to be a depressed/weak FA market.
Yates, on the other hand, will be 34 next opening day after a "mulligan" year lost to a relatively minor surgery. He will almost certainly have to sign a 1 year "re-establish value" deal. Why NOT do that with the Padres? He could definitely still re-establish as the lights out closer with a fresh arm and an even stronger pen behind him than what he had 5-6 weeks ago on opening day (!) Importantly he & his family love SD, and obviously he must be dying to pitch now with Padres finally good! He's not going to leave even 1-2 million $ on the table to stay in SD I don't think, b/c his earnings have been torpedoed by Covid/injury timing; but I'm sure staying would be HIS first choice.
Padres know more about his health than anyone.... I'd love to see them re-up Kirby on a 1 year low base heavy incentive deal. Even with all the new names, I put the odds of it happening around 50%.

Quote from fenn68 on September 1, 2020, 1:47 pmAgree that if Rosenthal is the closer on the world champion Padres ... and given his past national exposure as an elite closer ... will get a big / longer term deal given the teams that will be stretching for an established closer.
Yates will be hard to figure. His surgery was “just” cleaning up loose chips in the elbow ... so not really a concern for his readiness for 2021. On the other hand he will be 34. At 34 does Yates want to gamble on someone the next year wanting to sign him at 35? Push for a multi-year? Price coming off a top flight 2019? I think at his age he has to go for the best offer out there $/years ... which should be a lot less than Rosenthal ... and make him maybe more appealing to a lot of teams.
Pushing against that logic is what may set-up as a poor winter for FA as teams may choose to not spend based on the 2020 losses. No idea where the Padres will stand on spending.
If how the trade deadline materialized after most “experts” were convinced little will happen ... pretty sure we have no idea how the FA market will swing.
We will see how the Padres deal with this but expect Yates gets the offer at a “fair” level and the call will be his.
