Does the injury to Castillo keep Strahm in the Bullpen?

Not with Loup there. If Wieck isn't especially close at the end of spring, could increase the chances McGrath or Stout makes it as an NRI.

And now Paco Rodriguez

Wow ... that was fun to look at yesterday's lineup ... 7/8/9 of Fernando Tatis Jr / Franchy Cordero / Josh Naylor!

I'm a bit embarrassed to say that I'm losing my staunch anti-DH sentiment ...

Lol, or not. Both guys in the first group of players sent over to minor league camp, which officially opens tomorrow.

Strahm really needs to Start way team is composed now.

Bullpen relatively set:  Yates, Stammen, Warren, Loup (L).  Highly likely Maton.  Highly likely "6th SP" of Erlin/Perdomo/Mitchell.  Last spot pretty wide open between:  Stock, Wingenter, another "SP" if Pads lean towards opener or multi-inning RP, or less likely ST "phenom" like Cimber last year.

C: Hedges; Mejia

1B: Hosmer

2B: Kinsler

SS: Urias; Garcia

3B: Machado

LF: Myers

CF: Margot; Cordero

RF: Renfroe; Reyes

SP: Lucchesi; Lauer; Strahm; Mitchell; Paddack

RP: Yates; Stammen; Warren; Wingenter; Stock; Loup; Erlin; Maton

12 position players / 13 pitchers ... Pirela seems to be out for position players. Sitting to bump one of the pitchers (and this is still way open) are a few arms like Nix, Perdomo, Wieck.

One concern would be the lack of ABs for players that still could use development time: Margot; Cordero; Reyes all in their early 20s with limited ML time and even Renfroe who was showing improvement in the second half.

Still holding out for a deal or two to change the mix before opening day.

Mejia just keeps on hitting.

We need his bat in the lineup.

rotoworld.com sez ...

Bryan Mitchell was pummeled for four runs on three hits and three walks across 2 1/3 frames in Cactus League action against the Mariners on Tuesday.

He followed pitching prospect Cal Quantrill, who fared better in allowing one run over three innings. The big blow for Mitchell was a two-run shot he served up to Domingo Santana. Mitchell entered spring training perhaps with a leg up for a rotation spot since he's out of options, but it wouldn't be a surprise if the Padres cut him loose at this point given how bad he was last year.

The transition from "if" to "when" Mitchell gets DFA'd is accelerating!

At the same time the odds of Paddack on the 25 man is improved (especially they way they are praising him) ... this year's Lucchesi as a starter from Day 1.

Since that still only gets me Lucchesi - Lauer - Strahm - Paddack, a 5th starter is still open with I guess Nix - Perdomo - Kennedy - Erlin as 40 man roster types have the inside track but potentially a DFA of Mitchell creates a spot for L.Allen or, long shot Quantrill.  A lot can happen in 3 weeks.

Hard to tell how much is hype / fill and how much is the real Padres' opinion but Naylor is getting a lot of praise on his ML potential. Everyone seems to love his hitting potential ... even to the extent suggesting that he may be a factor in this year's OF mix with this LH bat ... even though he was only in AA last season.

Even getting "praise" for his defense ... not sure why based on the observations this spring but praise nonetheless. Will cut some slack being an OF for only 1/2 season ... so some learning to do ... well a LOT of learning to do.

Did hear that Green had him in RF with some interesting logic. The idea was that as a career 1B he sees /reads the ball better on the right side of the diamond which would help his defense. Not sure on that logic but does confirm their value of Naylor being worth exhausting options for his use.

Probably a safe bet he starts in AAA while still learning the OF and being non-roster but maybe a higher probability that he does end up as a Padres' 25 man than most of us thought.
