I know they rejected WASH deal because of deferred money but that was at the beginning of FA ... the market did not develop so Boras may look at this differently.

Washington supposedly wanted to defer 100m. Problem might not have been deferred money but the amount. Even accounting for take I doubt Harper is worth WARenfroe/WAReyes.

Heyman says ownership is meeting tomorrow to discuss the possibility of signing Harper. Maybe it's not that crazy.

Heyman is a Borat cultist.  Ignore everything he says.  The Padres are not even close to trying for Harper now, Heyman is all a mlb psyop.

Or maybe he's a plugged in reporter that fans like to hate on because he tweets a lot and sometimes rehashes known information.

I don't think Harper to the Padres is likely. Heyman himself acknowledged as much. I also didn't think Machado was likely. I do think that signing Machado showed that ownership is willing to spend for the right players. We know they had interest in Harper and we know he and his family like San Diego. Maybe ownership still has some wiggle room left and wants to see if they can come up with a creative way to bring him in. Frankly, given what we know I would be disappointed if they weren't at least talking about it which is all that was reported.

You don't become known as a Boras shill going back a decade without aiding Boras in misinformation campaigns. It's easier to dismiss anything Heyman puts out that's Boras related and wait on a more objective source.

A report just out is that the owner of WASH came out and said he has NOT talked with Boras in quite awhile ... suggesting the Harper is NOT in WASH's future. Although "reports" suggest that Harper has multiple $300MM offers ... except for PHIL ... those offers are a bit of a mystery. PHIL has said they will not bid against themselves so seem to be holding on an offer lower than Boras is seeking.

I guess at what level does a team find Harper a  "bargain" at $300MM+ and find common ground with Boras?

Keeping in mind that the Padres were not in on Machado until January when the market for him seemed "soft". Maybe the same scenario in a move on Harper. So not out of the question and would clearly lead to a more aggressive approach to dealing other corner OF whether it is to help the current SP or doing what Preller does well and gain some young upside for the "next wave" (like they got Tatis, Paddack, Naylor, etc.).

===========

Maybe a piece of the logic on Machado (and potentially Harper) ... beside just winning which is the most important ... is the ingraining the Padres into the minds of SD fans for the long haul now with the departure of the Chargers and no other major professional team to compete for that attention, loyalty, and yes money.

SD is not Boston, NY, or Chi but part of those teams financial success is holding on to the rabid fans even in their down seasons. IF this window allows the Padres lock in young fans for the long run ... long term value.

Just another potential piece of the puzzle.

+ 5000 per game ..= $40+ mil in revenue ..+ franchise value up..+ Corp sponsors + Boxes..+ endorsements and merchandise..Pads can easily cover increase payroll with increase attendance ...... And if they trade Myers now or in 2020.. Only + cost vs Harper is $12 or so mil.. and we have like $20 mil coming off the books ..so where there is a will theyre is a way

I'm sure as one of the most well known reporters in the game he has a relationship with the most powerful agent in the game. I'm sure that Boras uses that relationship to try to benefit his clients. I'm sure this leads to some misinformation being spread. I'm sure Heyman is responsible for spreading some of that information. I'm also sure that he gets plenty of credible information as well. I can understand the skepticism, but the way anything he reports about a Boras client is immediately dismissed and the idea that he would go as far as creating a fake meeting is to me absurd.

45 days ago I thought all of this Machado/Harper talk was forum filler and I was so wrong

Machado signed

Harper and his wife were married in the Mormon Temple here in San Diego and they are both from Las Vegas. He has been looking at not only the team but also the farm systems for long term competitiveness.

The Padres could afford him and as one of the two ( Generational ) talents to hit the free agent market.....why not sign him...already signed the other one  ?

Fans would go crazy and the rest of MLB would be in flat out shock

You'd need +7000 and $60/fan on top of the other stuff to not screw payroll up to the point that you couldn't add a major piece when competing.

He doesn't have to create a fake meeting, he just has to tie a meeting he knows about to Harper. Padres have been linked to 3 of the 4 remaining big FA, owners could be meeting for discussions on any of them. Hell, they could be meeting to discuss a cash call to pay Machado's signing bonus. He provides unreliable information in regards to Boras clients and clearly doesn't get a second source due to the amount of times he has been unreliable.

That is fine, you can consider it absurd.  Personally, I find anything he says about Boras to be questionable due to his past.  So I wait for another source to verify it or say something similar.

I think there is a lot of room between questioning his reports and saying he's a psyops cultist who should be ignored whenever he says anything Boras related. I think questioning what he says is perfectly fair given. I question some of what he says too. In this particular case I'm willing to believe him. Given what we know and some of the rumors we've heard I think it would be irresponsible for ownership not to sit down and talk about Harper even if it's just to say "hey there's no way we can do this right?" as part of a larger meeting.

Also I just saw that Peter Seidler got interviewed on 1090 and got asked specifically about Heyman's tweet on their interest in Harper. He basically called it a long shot, but said they aren't ruling anything out. The part on Harper starts just before the 10 minute mark.
