Quote from fenn68 on February 18, 2019, 5:54 amQuote from David Nevin on February 17, 2019, 6:35 pmSo we offered them “both” contracts.
What if they “both” say yes?
Guessing once one offer gets accepted the other gets withdrawn if they are open ended although most likely each had a window to accept and if they don't need to re-offer.

Quote from MrPadre19 on February 18, 2019, 8:21 amI know I've been all over the place on this Harper/Machado saga but another thing that I find interesting is that Moustakas signed his deal with Mil the same day Fowler went back to Fl and the figures supposedly offered came out.
Could it possibly be that Moose knew he wasn't coming to S.D. so he took the one year deal to stay in Mil. because the Padres got it done yesterday with Machado?
Soon to be announced?
Also,I wonder how much Machado and Harper are communicating during this?
Are they knowingly playing this game of "who signs first"?
Are they in cahoots about "when" they sign and when they announce said signing?
In other words...are they partly controlling the narrative concerning their signings together in any way?

Quote from fenn68 on February 18, 2019, 8:46 amFrom some of the notes, it sounds as though the Padres were only "mildly" interested in Moustakas ... and pretty sure Boras knew (or sensed) that. As last year, just no big market for Moose so he gets an offer ... sees no others coming and is back in MILW. Again we as fans apparently are seeing something in Moose (and other teams' potential interest) that the very few teams that might benefit from a 3B don't see. I guess $10MM to return to a contender with, what I hear, contains a number of good friends made last year makes sense IF not major counter offer is on the table. Good park to hit in ... try again next winter.

Quote from fenn68 on February 18, 2019, 9:01 amQuote from Booster SD on February 17, 2019, 6:07 pmApparently we have offered 8/$250M± for Machado and possibly more for Harper. If we are to land one of these, obviously Machado fits the need of SD more, but Harper supplies a much needed LH bat in a position of plenty players already. I dont think we trade Myers due to contract and under performance, so what can we expect to get for Renfroe and maybe Reyes?
Agree they don't trade Myers. Trading either Renfroe or Reyes would not yield all that much in return given their "limitations" and ML track record.
Reyes (who I like for his offensive potential) is just that potential given less than 1/2 year success in the ML and is limited defensively. Few teams really are looking for a DH type and a lot are out there still as FA. IF they found a trade partner for him ... maybe a good A ball prospect ... so, more likely they try to deal Renfroe or let Reyes have more time in the MiL ... and let both Renfroe and Reyes get some more plus stats to deal one our the other mid-season or next winter.
Renfroe also has his defensive limitations but can play better OF ... and has a longer track record in the ML clearly showing his power side. I can see teams being interested in him but still no great return (not nearly a Top 100 type player). IF the Padres want to clear out the corner OF surplus and given Preller's ability to deal for high quality prospects in Rookie to A ball that may be the best alternative in a Renfroe trade.
Since both are low cost and long term control ... clearly desirable targets for the likes of CLEVELAND or SF and some others (PHIL if they don't sign Harper). Desirable but not so desirable to pony up a major return piece.
We will see.

Quote from Brian Connelly on February 18, 2019, 9:22 amQuote from fenn68 on February 17, 2019, 7:11 amAt this late date the Padres could use that payroll space (if they want to) to sign Moustakas (2-3 years), Iglesias (1 year), and maybe Gio Gonzalaz (1 year) ... more importantly 2020 and beyond commitment would be only for Moustakas (and not that much) to refocus on filling other needs (e.g. #1 SP).
I have totally move off signing either Machado or Harper as the 2019 Padres even though the emotional side of my brain would like to see it. The analytical side says either would be a bad move for the longer term success of the ball club. > $30MM annually for > 7 years when you have Hosmer (4 more years > $20MM) and Myers (3 years > $20MM starting in 2020) saps the payroll from fixing the rest of the team ... > $70MM (2020-2022) going to 3 players out of maybe a $130MM budget ... very limiting.
Moreover, it is shaping up for 2019-20 being non-contending years so at least 2 years of the long deal are without payoff to the team on the field making the AAV of the productive years (if any) effectively that much more. Then just the risk of carrying a player with big money for that long and getting productivity through the entire contract is high risk (although I would expect both to have opt outs in 5 and exercise them).
Side note: I don't support the idea of the "marketing value" of either. Sure short term (e.g. 2019) would see a boost in tickets / merchandise .. but that is just one year of a long deal. However, after another non-contending year, that hype will fade and the attendance and merchandising will settle back into closer to "normal" levels.
As Machado has proven in BALT and Harper in WASH ... it takes a lot more than them to get to the World Series.
Yes, but the total amount of $ spent "placeholding" as you suggest has a 0% chance of getting to a WS, but you're still spending that lesser amount of $. At least these guys fit into a plan of fielding an elite contending team in the NEAR future.
If they did sign Machado, Myers stays put. But if they sign Harper, I wouldn't rule out trading Myers... circle back to the Indians but maybe for a deal centering around Myers + another OF + RP + SP + prospect/s for Bauer?? Just not enough MLB ammo to get 3 years of Kluber I don't think... but Myers + Yates + another OF might be a perfect fit for both teams. Not THAT big a $ bump in 2019, likely save that $ back or at least a wash in 2020, then Bauer MAY leave but his extremely clear/vocal year by year FA approach might work against him (for controlling team) if a Qualifying offer made to him?

I found both on Twitter.
Tony Gwynn Jr. made the point about the contract offer.
The Fowler to Miami post came from Padres Reddit from a guy who works at the airport apparently.
But who knows anymore?
Could all be complete B.S. and I'm usually not one to spread this stuff around.
I think the anticipation is getting the best of me......

Quote from MrPadre19 on February 18, 2019, 10:34 amWell there's nothing new yet today but the "word" is that we offered 8/250 and that it's the highest offer on the table and that it is not expected to be topped.
And actually Kevin Acee says it's "north of that".
Also it's being reported that Machado will "go with the highest offer".
If all this is true(who knows anymore) then it should be a done deal.....right?
🙂

Quote from MrPadre19 on February 18, 2019, 10:45 amI'm assuming all this talk of spending $250+ mil on one player has come from AJ assuring Ownership that he can still field a winner with our homegrown players without having to spend any more on free agents or upgrades via trade.
"Some" will come back in the way of increased ticket sales and merchandise.....I'm thinking they expect next year a huge increase in merchandise sales once the new uniforms are unveiled as well.
THIS is what building the top Farm system in baseball allows for.
Now.....we just have to hit on enough of our prospects for this all to become true....especially on the mound.
Well...that and actually sign Machado.
