It would be a coup if San Diego signed Machado....I'm not a fan of his " Manny don't Hustle" comment but with him and Hosmer along with Meyers, Renfro, Reyes, Margot, Janks, Hedges, Urias and Kinsler....that actually would look like a major league roster with Hosmer and Machado as the anchors

Get some sort of  Starting Rotation that are gamers and this season could be fun to watch as the "Hot Lava Talent" starts to arrive

( Tatis, Paddack, Mejia, Gore, Allen, Quantril, Patino etc.)

Even if Machado signs elsewhere the no brainer choice for me would be Moustakas to hold down 3B.....Solid guy all the way around....on the field, at the plate and in the club house....he and Hosmer on the corners would be like Garvey and Nettles in 1984....damn, did I really just say that? I guess I'm showing my age

On a side note....I see that AJ Ellis has signed as a special assistant for baseball operations. I predicted that would happen as he is a great teacher of the game and all the players had a ton of respect for him. His ability to teach and work with the other catchers and pitching staff is huge.

Great addition for the Padres in my opinion

While I get the excitement about a Machado or Harper signing, I think the better investment of monies would be Kuechel, Moose, and SS-Iglesias. Think about having an ultra successful LHSP leading the staff with all the LHSP we are projecting at this time. Lauer and Luchessi IMO are very similar to Kuechel, and he could still help with the likes of Gore, Weathers, and the others that are on their way. Plus, with the biggest competition being the LAD for the foreseeable future, LHSP at this time dominate Bellinger, silencing one of LA best hitters.

I could see an Iglesias (1 year) - Moustakas (3 year) - Keuchel (3 year deal) being a good bridge to contending with the prospects arriving over that timeframe and maturing as ML players. Iglesias is the 1 year bridge to Tatis ... Moustakas covers the lack of a 3B prospect near term ... Keuchel does cover a "risk" in getting 5-6 of the young SP candidates to actually produce at the ML level. Might be a little more cost initially than either Machado or Harper but would level out in the mid-term and save a ton in 4 years.

Should add that I see nearly zero chance they sign Machado primarily because they can't (and shouldn't) out bid CWS given CWS' clear motivation to sign him. Similarly next year ... if they get to FA .... Rendon / Arenado will be the same big money and prime candidates to return to their current clubs.

Fenn, I would agree with your assessment of the years and reasoning for both Igelsias and Moose. I would think/and be OK with, a 4-5 year deal for Kuechel as long as years 4 and 5 were options based on health and performance. So as long as a performance stat (your choice) was this or lower and pitched so many innings (say 150+), option 4 kicks in, and then the same for year 5. Plus, you could also give Kuechel an opt out after year 3, so if he is performing really well, he can test FA again or take the additional option years. That way the union "wins" a bit in this more frigid than expected FA season in getting a "5 year deal" and SD gets a good #2 that next year pairs well with the youngsters and a hopefully healthy Richards.

Would guess the Union would object to any "performance" stat being a trigger .. just as they have objected to a "performance" stat triggering pay incentives. Innings pitched OK.

For the Padres they have to hope that in 4 years (2022) they have enough quality SP up and performing that would be more effective than an aging Kuechel (and they will be other options on the market).

Apparently AJ Preller met with Machado and his wife, sometime in the past week

I reallty don't like Machado at all but the thought of Hosmer Urias Tatis and Machado with Hedges and Mejia does sound like an above average major league infield. Possibly Pads best ever. As long as it's not more than 6 or 7 years max which I doubt he will take. I think the pitching will take care of itself

ARGH!!!!!

Spring Training is open and we still have players/Teams trying to make up their minds!

It's driving me crazy!

Had a question, assuming both Machado and Harper asked about each other on those meetings? Let's say if one affects the other and they were told not at all. What then if both end up accepting their respective offers (if there are any). Sign both? Pads can't afford that, right?

From the spread sheet I have done using both Cotts and Baseball Reference, I have SD sitting at about $86M including dead money for guys such as Olivera, Gyorko, and others, and the money for Richards on the DL this season. I believe their high payroll was roughly $110M so they would have about $23m± to spend this year and not exceed the payroll of the 2015 team. Now there was rumor that SD could handle up to $130M payroll, and if thats the case, then they would have about $48M open/available for this season. With $48M, I think that you could land both Machado and Harper. But it would really hamstring you going forward with payroll, and not leave a lot of room for pitching adds if the young SPs dont pan out.
