Quote from fenn68 on February 11, 2019, 12:56 pmDon't recall the specific reference but did see some LV odds on teams signing Machado and Harper.
Machado: CWS #1 .... SD #2
Harper: SF #1 ... SD #2
Nothing to hang your hat on ... but interesting for a LV odds maker perspective considering their approach to generate betting.

Quote from MrPadre19 on February 12, 2019, 11:23 amIn the "For What It's Worth" category Vegas has the Padres 2nd in the odds to sign Harper and also 2nd in odds to sign Machado.
Obviously we won't sign both but at least somebody still figures we have a decent chance at one of them.

Quote from Booster SD on February 12, 2019, 11:41 amI think one of the reasons that SD is possibly considered a chance is because of our willingness to go long term with Harper. If he is rejecting an idea of a short term, then that takes LAD, SF, and some others out of the picture. If it boils down to SD and PHI, he might choose SD because of Boras's love of our hot lava talent and our west coast location. His wife supposedly loves SD and we all know "Happy Wife, Happy Life!"

Agree. Machado #2 SD surprises me. Either they really know something or it's based on the obvious glaring need/fit for SD.
Harper sure appears to be more invested & care more about winning. Think SD could win with NOT the largest $ as long as in ballpark of say, Philly. Would have to beat the field by significant amount IMO for Machado.

Quote from fenn68 on February 12, 2019, 4:34 pmWith nothing going on nationally with any of the top remaining FA, time for some random (and maybe delusional) thoughts.
Not much coming out from ANY teams (other than SF) on the FA. Taking that to a local level ... virtual radio silence coming out the the Padres' front office ... not heard from Fowler or Preller, and Green had an interview on 1090 and clearly was not going to make any comment on any FA (would not even confirm what everyone knows that they met with Harper). Why?????
So the idle mind becomes creative. What if the Padres have struck a deal with Boras (Harper) on a conditional basis based on Machado signing first then providing Harper a deal that is "better" (with some limits). For example, Machado signs with CWS for $240MM/8 years (AAV $30MM). If the Padres have agreed with Boras on a $264MM/8 years (AAV $33MM) ... done deal. However, if the Padres have agreed on the same number Machado signs for ... there is a bump up clause in the tentative agreement ... e.g. add a 9th year or bump the AAV ... to ensure Harper signs for more than Machado (and after Machado) ... good for Boras' reputation.
That would be a reason for total radio silence to keep others from trying to scuttle the deal. Also, if the Padres are confident they have Harper in the bag ... allows Preller to work (and be more flexible) in deals for Renfroe, Reyes, and Cordero without the trading partners seeing the Padres in a weak negotiation position with no spot for them in a Myers - Margot - Harper OF.
Pure fantasy ... BUT

Quote from MrPadre19 on February 12, 2019, 5:13 pmAll I know is this is getting more and more frustrating....and not just the Machado/Harper saga.
As was stated earlier a 96 loss team who seemingly want to improve have only signed a 36 yr old aging 2b and an injured starter.
All the while being linked to just about “every” available free agent and trade piece.
Was it all B.S.?
Is AJ just a horrible closer?
Were we “interested” only to fall short on “every” offer?
I mean....how many Starters were we rumored to be interested in?
Pretty much every one.
Then there’s the hitters we really need.
Pitchers and Catchers are reporting and we’ve basically swung and missed all but twice.
All I know is this is getting more and more frustrating....and not just the Machado/Harper saga.

AJ can close deals if he wants to: see "Rockstar GM." On the swing and miss comment, AJP still is only down one strike. In this boring new hotstove reality he is just playing the game that everyone else is playing too.

Quote from LynchMob on February 12, 2019, 6:50 pmPadres: Esteban Quiroz, INF
The Padres need infield depth, left-handed hitters and high-OBP guys. Quiroz fits the billing. After spending seven seasons playing professionally in Mexico, Quiroz signed with the Red Sox last year before San Diego landed him in November in exchange for the righty reliever Brewer. Now, Quiroz gets the chance to fight for an important role in the Padres' infield -- and perhaps a starting job at third. He batted .283/.406/.547 in the Boston organization last season. -- AJ Cassavellhttps://www.mlb.com/padres/news/30-mlb-acquisitions-who-could-pay-off-big/c-303815722
That .406 OBP seems ... worth giving a shot to!

I just find it hard to believe that the asking price for “every” deal...whether trade or free agent, was just too high.
I don’t want him to make a deal just to make one......and I don’t want to “get taken” either....our prospects are too valuable, but not a single one could have been had for a realistic package or contract?
Kluber,Syndergaard,,Gray,Degrom,Kikuchi,Realmuto,Paxton,Eovaldi,Harper,Machado,Moustakas.
I’m sure I’m missing some trades we were “in” on.....
